flying to Izmir to buy Ikea furniture

Hi all,

I will shortly be furnishing a four bed duplex apartment in Ilica.

It may be a crazy idea, but having spent a lot of time looking around the local furniture shops and despairing of the white lacquer, diamond studding, mirrors, leaves, flowers and tassels on everything, I am now considering taking a flight to Izmir and ordering everything at Ikea.

Has anyone else been mad enough to do this and if so how did you get on?

I have been to Ikea at Bornova a couple of times. Generally same as in UK & Italy, you can walk round and actually buy rather than order. I would just go to the pick up point after the tills and ask when their delivery day is before buying. You can also look on line at the Izmir store at home before you go.

I don't blame you Els, the diamond studding gets right on my nerves, I will be very interested to see how you get on!

Re: flying to Izmir to buy Ikea furniture

I know how you feel Louise. At our last place we bought sofas and actually had the supplier remove the "diamond" studs and replace them with buttons. They thought we were very odd.
Someone just recommended Yatas in Manavgat to me, so thought I would pop in there tomorrow. Do you happen to know where that is? I think it might be somewhere near the main police station?
It's amazing really that it has to be so difficult. There is this magazine called "EVIM" which has the most gorgeous furniture and fabrics in it, but most of it is probably only available from shops in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara.

Re: flying to Izmir to buy Ikea furniture

I do know where Yatas is. Do you know where the Akdeniz hospital is? If you do, go down this road, you will come to a small roundabout with a Genpa on one of the corners it is just up this street, (not very far up), I do agree that Yatas is not bad but I have been half heartedly looking for a new sofa for ages & did look here a while back & nothing jumped out at me. Though I don't really know what I want either!! We got our mattress topper in yatas. I like Merinos (on the D400) too but some of their stuff can be ornate. I liked some of their smaller items, decorations. I also think the longer I live here the more brain washed I am becoming & liking more of the turkish things!! Maybe in a yr or 2 I wil be getting a diamond studded sofa, lol!

Have you looked at Kelebek? On the same road as Sali Pazar, my neighbour raves about this shop.

Re: flying to Izmir to buy Ikea furniture

I recently ordered on-line from Ikea, and delivery was very cheap. However I've been told that delivery charges for on-line orders are considerably cheaper than in-store orders, so you may be better to do it on-line. Friends who live locally furnished their whole house on-line - it all arrived on an enormous truck!

The on-line system is reasonably easy to navigate, but you do need a Turkish credit card to pay.

Re: flying to Izmir to buy Ikea furniture

Els, I think Yatas is now called Enza Home (well it is in Alanya). You can look at their range on line and although it is a little more expensive that the diamond studded stuff it is modern and European looking. Good luck with whatever you decide and do let us know how you get on.

Re: flying to Izmir to buy Ikea furniture

Thanks guys. Merinos did have too high a Liberace content for me Louise, haha. Will have a look in Yatas/Enza and in Kelebek tomorrow. If that is just more of the same I shall go back to Holland, select stuff from the Turkish Ikea website, and actually view the stuff in one of the Dutch Ikea shops so I have at least seen it, then try and order everything online.
Like Yildez says, it wil be one hell of a big truck! We have 200m2 to furnish! Any voluntary Ikea flatpack assembly experts around???

Re: flying to Izmir to buy Ikea furniture

Hi Els,

As far as I am aware you can look on the UK ikea's website and use the product codes as they are the same worldwide. Then order them online (TR Ikea) and have it all delivered to your door ;-)

All the best,

Ste
