Turkey tourism almost back to 2015 levels!!

Thomas Cook’s Turkey capacity has almost returned to 2015 levels.

The country became Cook's "number one selling destination" in the lates period
Speaking at the Hays Travel Independence Group annual conference in Marbella, Katrina Latimer, trade partnership manager at Cook, said that the rising costs of Spanish holidays in 2017 had in part led to a Turkey “resurgence”, which began mid-summer.

“It actually became our number one selling destination in the lates period,” she said. “And that’s what it’s going to look like moving forward into summer 2018 as well.”

“Pretty much every UK departure airport has Turkey capacity for 2018 – we have a huge Antalya programme. For Turkey we are nearly back at 2015 capacity levels.”

Regarding Tunisia, Latimer said Cook was keen to support the community and help rebuild tourism. We want to endorse what has clearly been labelled a safe destination.

“We’ve had a very sensitive approach to this,” she said, adding: “To date the success has come from previous Tunisia customers.”

She said the programme is based mainly around Hammamet and added that the quality of product offered by Cook in the destination was “higher quality” than in previous programmes.

The programme includes three Sentido resorts and one Aquamania.

There will be four flights out of the UK to Tunisia this winter, starting in February. In summer 2018 there will be 12 flights and new airports have been added: Stansted, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle and Luton.

Elsewhere, Latimer said Cook’s new Egypt programme to Marsa Alam was “flying” and Hurghada had been very successful this summer.

Re: Turkey tourism almost back to 2015 levels!!

Good news at last for Turkey, I feel safer here than I would in the UK and cannot understand why tourists haven't been coming.

I only hope people venture out of the AI hotels and spend some money in the local restaurants, bars and shops.

I know a lot of German, Dutch and Belgian people continue to give Turkey a wide berth because of the political situation (lack of human rights, lots of people jailed for their political views, lack of press freedom, and Erdogan trying to interfere with those European countries that have a sizeable population with Turkish roots). I think the safety thing is much less of an issue.

I also know of people who refuse to entertain a holiday in Turkey whilst the political situation remains as it is. Maybe when the State of emergency is removed...watch this space.

The numbers from Scandinavia are 500 percent up from this year in the early bookings so things are looking up for Turkey.

Obviously not everyone is so discerning. Lots of people were attracted to the donkeys on Blackpool beach too.

Re: Turkey tourism almost back to 2015 levels!!

Thinks are moving in the right direction at least... the downward trend has reversed...but caution reading too much into Thomas Cooks 'capacity' spin... the official reported foreign arrivals numbers in eaarly summer were looking really good, but upon closer inspection it appears these 'foreign arrivals' numbers included much more than just tourists... and the most recent numbers revealed something new and surprising- one third of foreign tourism arrivals were comprised of Turks now living abroad returning back to Turkey for summer holiday... the astounding thing is the size of the numbers; fivec work years ago this was a tiny fraction of the overall proportion ... to think there are now that many Turks having moved abroad in that short a time is astounding... were not talking ethnic Turks living in Germany (Germans). Bottom line- tourism revenues are still far below 2015, so further to go yet, but finally moving in the right direction.!
