Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

I see that not all British Postage stamps are marked 1st or 2nd Class.
This stamp off my friend's card is clearly a 1.57 jobby but she obviously got 1st Class Service as it only took 5 days to get here!

I must admit, we don't seem to have much in the way of problems with mail going in and out of Side. Between using the office address and my PO Box for incoming mail, nothing goes astray and only occasionally, something sent out, never arrives at its foreign destination.
Italy comes out top with us for being a bit of a lottery and although mail to Canada eventually arrives, it can take up to 5 weeks! A Canadian guy here tells me that's because some of their mail still goes out with the sled-dogs to regions that are not so accessible in the winter.

Nepal? Only on my 1st trip to Nepal years ago did I bother to send postcards. Not one arrived at its destination so I've never posted out of, or into Nepal since.

Long may our Posties carry on. Great people.

As was a push button " A " , then button " B " red box phone call Hils .

Many a blackjack or salad gum bought with a couple of coppers left in the return scoop of the phone by a drunk , outside the Canbury Arms , as i joyously recall from my misspent youth Hils .

It's only letters/cards etc that get a 1st or 2nd class stamp, and now they're sorted by size too, so an A4 large envelope will be more expensive than a standard A5.

The other stamps are for price only, as the post office puts a bar code on parcels to match your receipt which tells the reader which service you've bought. The bar code also lets you track delivery online, which is really helpful.

Steve
That reminds me of the red phone box we had in Chinley village in Derbyshire when I was a teenager all those many moons ago.

After each digit dialed, we would rapidly push the black disconnect button the same number of times, i.e. dial 3, push down 3 times, dial 6, push down 6 times, etc until the whole number was dialed. Provided you'd got no zeros in the number, you'd get connected for free and never even had to put your 4 coppers in the slot!

8's & 9's were a challenge but the lads had it off to a fine art and on summer evenings every night could be 'Phone a Friend' night.

"Thanks for the memory Steve."

Kanga, I went into Superdrug/Savers and W.H. Smith yesterday and none of them are selling any stamps ! Maybe the card shops e.g. Clintons will sell at a discount, I will ask.

That's disappointing. I suppose it's a sign of the times. Costco still sell at 5% discount.
We also have a Scouts Christmas Post in Cardiff and many small shops support it. You can buy Scout stamps at about half the PO price and post your cards in the same shops, but only for local deliveries. They have to be done very early in December.
Are there Scout posts in any other areas?

No Kanga - never heard of Scouts stamps ! 5% discount is good, if you are buying lots of stamps for the Christmas post !

Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

I'm afraid I'm getting lazier in my old age! I use e-cards from this website for folks abroad. An annual subscription is about 11 for unlimited use and they are beautifully made with a huge choice for all occasions.
