Postal Charges From Britain.

This morning, as usual at this time of every month, I went down to the PTT to pay both mine and my daughter's internets, telephone, electricity & water bills here in Side.

At the same time, I posted 10 x A5 Christmas cards out to Britain giving them every chance to arrive late November or early December. I took my mail from my Post Office Box, to see that the 1st of my Christmas cards had also arrived from Britain.

Now, this is what shocked me.
10 x A5 Cards from Turkey to Britain. Cost? 4.5T.L. each. 85pence.
1 x A6 incoming card had a 1.57 postage stamp on it. Thats 8 T.L.

How on earth can Britain justify such a charge?
If an A6 postage cost equates to 8T.L. then an A5 card coming into Turkey is possibly going to cost the sender from Britain the equivalent of 9T.L. or even more!

The mind boggles!!

Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

You are so right Freedom 49. they keep putting the price of postage stamps up and, cunningly the price is never printed on the stamp (so we don't all get a shock!) instead it is printed 1st or 2nd class. I sent a small get well card to Canada last week - 1.40. !!

Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

In a way you have answered your own question, we have a large to the door delivery network in the UK, the business also now has to satisfy shareholders after the royal mail give away.
As in type this they are announcing their results on the news, not great.

That actually makes good business sense as it saves on having to reprint every time there is a price increase. One can also buy ahead of a price increase and still use the stamps which were bought at the cheaper price.

That aside I get annoyed with the size restrictions, I send a small item approx 8mm x 5mm which weighs less than one gram and due to the thickness I have to send it as a large letter costing 76p, in fact the envelope weighs more than the item.

As for small parcels I have sent hundreds over the past few years and not one sent by royal mail as `other` carriers are much cheaper, royal mails loss.

Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

I agree wholeheartedly Ann/Freedom69. Earlier this week I went to the same post office as you did here in Side, the PTT, and I had 6 x packages that were quite heavy and included a letter from me to all friends in England, I also sent 5 x packages within Turkey ... total bill for all 11 x items and the ones to UK by air ... 49 TL !! I dread to think what they might have cost from UK to Turkey. What's more, the guy at the desk at the PTT Post Office assured me that the Turkish ones would get there the very next day but the UK ones would take 10 to 15 days to arrive at their destination. x Angela in Side x

Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

Pension contributions. . employer's NI contributions (approx 12% of salary with no cap, unlike the workers' contributions) . . cost of vehicles. . . road tax. . . . fuel, vehicle and public liability insurance?
All vastly more expensive in UK. Is there the equivalent in TC?

It's a bit rich being so smug about the difference in delivery times. The reason that post coming from the UK to Turkey takes so long is largely down to lack of infrastructure in Turkey. We live out in the rural area of west Wales but our postie delivers faithfully every day (still in his shorts today), by van. His round must be at least 20 miles, but in Turkey, 2 kms from the PTT, we rarely see a postie except when the bank sends a new card. A birthday card took 3 weeks from UK to Datca this summer.

As the UK Royal Mail stamps have no price on them you can buy and hoard forever if you wish.

Not sure if it still applies, but Superdrug used to sell RM stamps at a 5% discount, particularly around special days like Mother's Day, Christmas, etc.
Costco also sells stamps at a discount.

Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

I'll ask Superdrug if they still do sell discounted stamps, as I usually buy about 40 at this time of year. Thanks for that !

Re: Postal Charges From Britain.

I think in the UK that the postal charges , for a UK wide , daily walk up service is amazing value , fifty six pence for a class 2 stamp is value for money .
