Turkish Government introduces accommodation tax; sector not happy

Özgür Töre 04 November 2019

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Party submitted a new draft law to the parliament, which proposes regulations on the tax system. The draft legislation includes the introduction of an accommodation tax.

The new tax will come into force in April next year.

According to the new tax, 5-star hotels and resorts will pay 18 Turkish lira (TL) per person per night, 4-star hotels and resorts will pay 12 TL, 3-star hotels will pay 9 TL, 2-star hotels, pensions, motels, apart-hotels, and camps will pay 6 TL, boutique hotels and special licensed accommodation facilities will pay 18 TL.

Muberra Eresin The Hotel Association of Turkey TÜROB Chairman Müberra Eresin said, “As of October 2019, Turkey Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) is established and as part of the law, 7.5 per thousand shares were taken over from hotels’ turnover for funding the agency.

Immediately thereafter, the new tax will force the tourism facilities, which have recently started to revive.

As the sector, we were not strong enough to handle this load. When both funds and taxes overlap, they will reach a level that will harm the sector,”.

Your right Ibo there is a strong opposition against it by the opposition parties and Turkey Hoteliers Federation (TUROFED) ..........

Hoteliers not to increase prices for domestic tourists in 2020: Jolly chairman.

Travel agency Jolly Tur’s chairman Meter Vardar said that hoteliers have reached an agreement to not increase their room rates in 2020 for domestic tourists.

“When we signed contracts with the hoteliers this year, we did not accept their demand for price increases. And as of October, we are initiating early reservation campaigns…This year, domestic tourists will do their vacation without any increase in [hotel] prices,” he said.

Re: Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

So does this new hotel tax apply to all tourists or just international ones?

Seems all as it says in Turkish newspapers speaking specifically to Turks "A citizen going on holiday" when referring to the new law... the English one relating to us as tourists tells we will as well ....

I am unsure in the wording if it will be the Hoteliers who will pay the tax or the person directly actually using the accommodation different papers word it differently ways .. not unusual for Turkish law to vague...

Re: Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

Brilliant, I pay 20% tax on the rental income, I then pay 18% vat on that sum ( no VAT reclaimable by me but I bet my agents off set it!) now an additional tax.
I'm presuming this will be billed to the hotelier, or in my case owner, as how would they collect it otherwise.
Prices going up in 2021, can't do it for 2020.
It is only the exchange rate that keeps me letting my villa, soon I will decide it is not worth the aggravation. 8 people occupy my villa, transfers from airport, I pay managing agent, pool and garden maintenance, these people eat in the local restaurants, drink n the bars and take trips, pay the local taxi drivers etc.
English families who want a villa holiday, with private pool are not going to go in your typical Turkish hotel or pensyion, well done Turkey, Spain, Portugal ( no 4 hour flight) and other holiday destinations must be so pleased.i

Re: Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

Does this mean that Turkish nationals will be exempt from the tax but foreigners will have the tax added to their bill ? Sorry to appear thick !

I suspect it can only apply to places registered as a business licensed to provide accommodation.
