Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

Turkish Tourism Bounces Back and Looks Forward to 2018

The Turkish tourism industry started 2017 with apprehension, but industry insiders are celebrating a successful comeback with high hopes for 2018. Stats revealed by the country’s official statistical organisation said in the first ten months of 2017, tourist numbers increased by 28% year-on-year, coming in at a total of 29 million international visitors.

The numbers also show a dramatic shift in trends. Historically, Istanbul has always been the number one holiday destination, but Antalya who clocked up a record-breaking 9.5 million visitors, took number one place surpassing Istanbul by 500,000 people.

Out of all the nationalities, Russians proved to be the most significant contributors to the comeback with 4.5 million passing through the borders. Russian visitors to Turkey dramatically tanked in 2016, after their government banned all charter holidays and flights. The second biggest visiting nationality was the Germans, followed by Iranians.

Health Tourism in Turkey

Another primary contributor to the comeback was health tourism, a rising global trend that Turkey tapped into with professional procedures performed at much lower prices than European countries. 751,000 people visited Turkey with the specific aim of receiving treatment such as in-vitro fertilisation, cancer treatment, hair transplants and cosmetic surgery.

Out of all the nationalities receiving medical treatment, first was the Iraqis, closely followed by the Libyans. Health tourism is expected to have generated over 7 billion in revenue by the end of 2017.

In 2016, only 23.5 million tourists visited Turkey, a sharp drop on 2015 when the country welcomed 36 million people. Turkish tourism experts are hopeful they can see through to the end of 2017 with a near match to 2015 figures.

Turkish Tourism in 2018

Globally, travel operators, airlines and workers are gearing up for the 2018 Turkish tourism industry to return to its usual record-breaking figures. The UK travel giant, Thomas Cook, has said 2018 bookings for Turkey are strong.

EasyJet has also added two more flights to their Dalaman operation, while Jet2 increased their capacity by nearly 100%, and added a direct route from Ireland to Turkey. Meanwhile Atlas Global said they are doubling their flights from Russian to Antalya.

Tourism professionals in Antalya are also aiming to earn 100 million euros in the first three months from sports tourism alone. They plan to do this by hosting around 2,000 young player football teams for training. Stating that things are back to the good old days, teams from countries like Iran, Slovenia and Russia have already confirmed their placements.

Industry insiders are also predicting the return of cruise ships and European visitors. Germany’s FTI group, one of the country’s biggest travel agencies said no other destination could match Turkey and they will continue to invest time and money in it. The group currently run 16 flights to Bodrum and will begin their new schedule in March.

Re: Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

Jet2 Travel trends

We have examined bookings data to look at holiday trends for 2018, and they have turned up some very interesting findings.

By looking at Jet2holidays bookings, we can reveal the up-and-coming destinations for 2018, as well as the most popular family getaways and best city hotspots, as city break bookings become more and more popular.

Looking at booking patterns year on year, there are some interesting shifts in destination choices.

Britons know a good deal when they see it, as bookings to Turkey are seeing a huge surge for 2018 thanks to its range of 2-5 star hotels, rich culture, endless sun and fantastic value. On the back of that demand, we have increased capacity by over 600,000 seats, and have seen a fourfold increase in bookings to Antalya, with bookings to Bodrum and Dalaman more than doubling.

It’s not just Turkey bringing in the crowds. Italy and Croatia are also seeing huge growth, as are the Greek Islands and Cyprus. We are seeing more and more customers looking to explore new and undiscovered regions, which is demonstrated by the growth in bookings to Costa de Almeria and Halkidiki.

There are two Italian destinations making the list of top 10 biggest growing destinations for bookings (Verona and Naples). The top 10 destinations seeing most growth in 2018 are:

1. Antalya, Turkey

2. Verona, Italy

3. Halkidiki, Greece

4. Bodrum, Turkey

5. Naples, Italy

6. Costa de Almeria, Spain

7. Dalaman, Turkey

8. Kos, Greece

9. Kefalonia, Greece

10. Larnaca, Cyprus

Re: Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

Of course the table excludes destinations that Jet 2 do not fly to ...

From the totals deduct monarch and BA flights no longer operating and we may understand better why JET 2 have indicated an increase .

Re: Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

It is easy to see a large percentage increase on a small number, it does not prove that it is more popular than others with a stable large number of tourists

Re: Turkish Tourism Bounces Back!

It depends much on the Foreign policy and threats of terrorism, bookings at this stage do not translate automatically into TL in the bank. I can see more shenanigans on the way to 2019

Edit

20 mins later QED
Three sandy Mediterranean beaches, including the ancient Patara Beach in Antalya’s south and castle land will be zoned for construction as their protected statuses have changed, the Official Gazette reported on Jan. 9.

When it comes to family holidays, beach breaks are still prevalent with UK families wanting as much sun, sea and sand as they can fit in! The Top 10 Jet2holidays family bookings destinations for Summer 18 are:

It appears families prefer Spain or Portugal for their destination of choice for 2018
