Cool Rubbish dropped

It's such a shame to see the streets and especially the countryside littered with rubbish (no pun intended). We walked round the back of the falls in Manavgat for example and tho there is lovely countryside its spoiled by rubbish! Also at the airport people open their door and chuck rubbish out as if its normal behavior.

I.m going to email the Manavgat belediyesi but can't see an email address on their website - does anyone have it please?
Have you that live there tried complaining to them?
We enjoyed our hol apart from this.

Re: Rubbish dropped

Hi Wendy, good luck with the belediye, I cannot see what they can do, they are not responsible for educating people. We feel the same way, and always say something if we see people littering.

Re: Rubbish dropped

Good luck, but again I think your pleas will fall on deaf ears. There's a huge lack of education about the environment in Turkey, and most Turks really don't comprehend why we get so upset at the litter, although I think I've seen a TV advert about recycling? We regularly see people burning plastic & dumping rubbish. Have you tried to buy something in a market or shop without the obligatory plastic bag to wrap it in? They genuinely feel they're being kind by giving you the plastic bag, and it feels like I'm insulting them by refusing to accept it. Also, it's not just Turkish people who dump rubbish!

Re: Rubbish dropped

People parked outside our villa, which is near Bim, seem to think it’s okay to chuck their food wrappers and drink containers over the wall into our garden. No it bloody isn’t!

Yes for most Turkish people it is normal behaviour and as per usual it is the British 'foreigner' attempting to change their way of life, albeit for the better.

The way a lot of turks look at it is, if the streets are clean there will be less jobs for them on the belediyesi . Clean streets mean's less work.

Re: Rubbish dropped

Rubbish and spitting are the two most unpleasant things for me. It makes me SOOO mad to see it but, as you say, it is education. Migros were selling excellent long-life carrier bags for very a few kuras each. We bought quite a few, some to take back to the U.K. and some for friends. I was disappointed to see, when we returned some months later that they were dishing out plastic carriers as per usual. Frustrating !

Re: Rubbish dropped

The thing is that there are a lot of rubbish bins around the place but you see bags of litter placed besides the bin instead of inside it! Are they too lazy to actually place it in the bin? If we can't find a bin, we take our rubbish home to dispose of it as if we chuck it out of the window, it makes us as bad as them! The spitting aspect I agree is a totally disgusting and a habit I'm glad the UK managed to stamp out, until now, where it is again rife and the spread of TB is again on the up due to this horrible act!
