Thumbs up Opera and Ballet from 1st to 18th September 2019

THE 26th ASPENDOS INTERNATIONAL OPERA AND BALLET FESTIVAL WILL TAKE PLACE in September this year ... from 1st to 18th September. It is a unique occasion to enjoy the world's best classic repertoire in likewise best-preserved ancient amphitheatre.

The festival was established on a national level in 1994 and acquired international status in 1998. In 2003, the British Independent Newspaper gave it the 5th position among the world's ten most respectable festivals of that kind. One of the reasons for its popularity is the unique location. Aspendos amphitheatre was constructed back in the 2nd century A.D. when the city was under the rule of the Roman Empire. Its creator—a famous Roman architect Zeno—used only top quality calcareous stone. During the reign of Seljuks, the theatre was turned into a palace, and reinforced with bricks. After all, Turkey deserves to be given the proper credit for the excellent conservation of the theatre that remains functional till modern days.

Aspendos is located in Antalya Province, four kilometres north off Serik, and only 38 kilometres from Antalya itself. Here is the link to the official website of the Festival, its program and list of ticket offices. It is also posible to buy tickets online.

This is the programme for 2019 =

September 1-2 : Carmen (opera),

September 8: Swan Lake (ballet),

September 12-13: Aida (opera)

September 16: Troy (epic opera)

September 18 : Gala-Concert

September 12-13: Aida (opera)

September 16: Troy (epic opera)

September 18 : Gala-Concert

How fabulous. If we were there we would definitely buy tickets. Cheaper than the Royal Opera House I guess. I wonder if people will dress up for it.

My wife and I went there a couple of times a few years ago now. But it was a fantastic experience. Sat up there in that huge semi-circle of stone seats (Cushions are supplied)
And the sound was superb as was the show. It's a wonderful feeling to be sat there watching a show where nearly 2000 years ago others were doing exactly the same....but not eating ice-cream though!! Butt007

Re: Opera and Ballet from 1st to 18th September 2019

Butt007 - - As far as I know, and it was true last year at least, cushions were not supplied - we brought our own as those old Roman ruin stones you sit on are "rock hard"! Cushions were only available at the amphitheatre if you paid through the nose for them and then had to return them at the end of the day anyway.

Anyone from this Forum who is interested in seeing one of these shows would be welcome to stay with me at Mirage Residence. My spare room has twin beds and the apartment has 2 x bathrooms; one with a jacuzzi/bath and the other with a shower; the complex has an indoor and outdoor pool as well as a fitness centre, barbeque area, and 3 x brothers who do security in shifts of 8 hours each. I'm a 15-minute walk to the second longest sandy beach in Turkey - West Beach, Side - and also there is the promenade which is the longest one in the Mediterranean.... Angela in Side x

What a lovely generous offer. We did look at doing this... but thats as far as we got. We may just have a little look again.
We went to Aspendos and Perge a few years ago, and it is just amazing. xx

Angela , thanks so very much , at the moment i cannot stay outside our own places , my legs need daily dressing removal , washing and debriding and the ulceration re dressing , it has to be kept sterile which would be difficult .

It is so very kind of you , if the treatment works then we would be delighted to take up your super offer in a year or two .

Will let you know in plenty of time how things go...

Once again thanks so very much Angela , regards and best wishes to you both...

Love and best

Steve n Jackie

Re: Opera and Ballet from 1st to 18th September 2019

Hello again Steve - You're welcome - but don't put it off just because your legs need dressing, etc. - in fact I currently have the same problem and have only been out of a one month stay in hospital a week ago. There was yellow puss running down both legs constantly, ruining my socks and trousers. The doctor in the hospital told me that if I had not gone in when I did, I would have been dead within 2 or 3 days. It doesn't bear thinking about. Anyway, my left leg is now 100% ok but the right one still has some puss coming out but not nearly as bad as it was. I am lucky in a way that I own 2 x properties on this complex, Mirage Residence; one I live in and the other I rent to a brain surgeon from the local Bilgi Hospital; and above me is a married Turkish couple who are both doctors; she is a gynacologist and he is a general practitioner ... so no lack of doctors if I need one.

Do come in September. No problem with the changing of dressings etc. And there is a pharmacy just around the corner too.

Mike and I split up - amicably from both of us - about 6 months ago Steve. He prefers to live in Cardiff. I prefer to live in Side, Turkey. So it would never have worked long-term but we remain good friends and still talk on the phone occasionally or email about once a week. I am finding now that I actually enjoy living alone and would not wish to have another man in my life in any case. Mike is the same. Age or what?!

I just checked flights from Gatwick to Antalya return direct in September and TUI Airlines have one for £114 return departing on 3rd September and returning on 17th September. Not a bad price! Hoping to see you and Jackie ... Love from Angela x ...
