solar panels

could anybody please tell me what care we need to take over our solar panels. we have been informed that we have to get somebody in each year to put antifreeze into the solar panels on the roof to stop them freezing and cracking in winter. any experience of this ? we were quoted a price (cant remember what it was now) and told it would have to be done each year.

I thought that the water running through a solar panel was the water that came out of your tap, sounds like you have a solar panel fueled by Austrian wine.

Seriously, if the solar panel for some reason needed a static water tank not connected to the hot water supply, you would see the reservoir or tank.

Anitfreeze...Last winter we did have frost and the solar panels were freezing up (sounds awful) but exploding. we were told by our agent at the time to ensure to put antifreeze in to stop this happening, however, we forgot this year and touch wood have not had this problem. although it has been cold at night it has not been as bad as last winter.

Our pipes are lagged - but I also thought this was the water that came out of your shower?

lorraine,

Do you have to drain them and flush them out before using at the start of the season? I can understand the purpose of it but it is the shower/drinking water we are talking here.

Teresa, lagging the pipes apparently only goes a shortway to solving the problem, but not the panels there is (so i have been told) a plugged hole that you pour the antifreeze into, but i am not going on the roof!!! how it works not a clue. but do know that it does not affect the water from the tank?
I do know that last winter the houses around ours had water pouring out as they (the panels) froze and the water push out through the pipes?? and was running off the roofs.....that is the extent of my knowledge...should really have taken more notice..probably will when happens to us..ah well

Juco.. sorry really havent got a clue...just know that can still use the water.. so now this is my ignorant reply.. that the antifreeze must run round a different channel...i really dont know...sounds too much like a caar engine to me...lol and i only know how to start the damn thing!!

OK.. I have just typed in solar panels into google and found sites and questions and answers...got a bit techy for me but the new solartwin has no need for antifreeze?? dont know what make ours is..
but appears to be a new model in UK but not sure re Turkey.. sorry folks..not much help there am I...
If I do find out more will post this evening will post...but dont hold your breathe, the answer will probably be in Turkish! and confuse me even more!

Steve & sylvia,
We bought our appartment from Turkish Homes & they were very good at mentioning all these sort of things, they adviced us of the service that they carry out each year, emptying or adding antifreeze each year. The charge is 50. However said not to do it this year 'cause we have'nt got our water on yet. We thought that was quite good 'cause god knows if we'd got to do it ourselves. Zoe'.

Zoe I sure hope that is a one off payment as the antifreeze is only 2-3ytl ...someone thinks someone is coining it in....and as you can see it is not a done by everyone... but if you are happy to pay this and ensure that they do carry out the work, fair enough, but i would like to be on site to see that this is done, I think that if this is the going concern i am going to start my own business i am not afraid of heights so for 50 a pop any takers????
