Smile Water Tank - Single Tank System

Came out a couple of weeks ago for a few month - last week noticed water coming from the little header tank and as we are in a block of four we are never sure whose tank was whose so our English site manager called out the usual site plumber who I personally don't like and don't usually use. Turned out the ball cock was sticking and it was my header tank so new ball cock fitted - 60 lira - fine. Whilst he was up there he pointed out neighbours header (little) tank was badly corroded and would split shortly so he had a replacement - 150 lira - fine - everyone happy.

A week later (yesterday) my little header tank is overflowing quite badly so call same plumber as I suspect it is just sticking - he comes out looks in it and says big tank needs replacing. He then draws me a diagram to show the big tank has an inner tank and that must have a little hole in it and it isn't working properly so pressure pushes the water up and out of the little header tank - all sounds logical to a layman so he get price for new tank and although I actually said "I think I'll get another plumber to look at it" - I eventually agreed to go ahead as I have one eye on overflowing header tank at 850 lira - new tank 3mm inner thickness (he says) with 10 year guarantee (the current one is 10 years old and not showing signs of wear).

So he orders new tank and will fit Saturday all work and refitting immersion heater included and he fiddledd with ball cock in header tank and overflow stopped but he said "if it starts again turn water off at mains when you are not using".

BUT we have not had a problem since - we are using water / showering etc and although I am a layman I can't get my head around if there is a hole in the inner tank surely the pressure would be there continually and it would overflow all the time although he did seem to be saying the pressure builds up as you use it.

A lot of neighbours have used this guy for years so maybe I am being unfair but I can't help thinking I am being had over but at least I will be able to see my new tank and again to be fair he said "50 lira now and 800 when you are happy and everything is working"

Re: Water Tank - Single Tank System

I had exactly the same problem last year in our sun max system, the big tank is under mains pressure and the inner tank is a sealed system that circulates the water through the tank heating it, if you get a hole in the inner tank which is actually the heating coil in our case then the mains pressure of the mains tank pushes out through the header. In our case our system had a 5 year guarantee. So was covered under warranty as the system was a month short of the 5 years

Martin - many thanks for taking the time to reply and that does make me feel slightly better - I just can't understand how if that is our problem the header is no longer overflowing and made me think it was more to do with a ball cock than pressure but hey I was a greengrocer what do I know

Re: Water Tank - Single Tank System

I first replaced my ballcock on the header, they cost about 20 tl so i thought it was a chance worth taking, didn't cure it so i called sunmax out and they were briliant.

Re: Water Tank - Single Tank System

Yes but we are waiting 3 day's for a new tank to be made to the exact size of existing one and whilst we are waiting we have no leaks or overflowing header tank - strange?

Re: Water Tank - Single Tank System

Maybe they have isolated the header tank ie put a blanking plug on it.

Re: Water Tank - Single Tank System

Martin - don't think so as he took nothing on the roof with him and even borrowed my tape measure to measure the tank - but I have now told him to forget it and lost my 50 lira deposit and will give my preferred plumber a call if any signs of leaking occur.

When I said "2 days no problems so I don't want a new tank" he just said "ok" and didn't try to persuade me so not sure what to think?

Re: Water Tank - Single Tank System

Couldn't you have a word with your preferred plumber and explain what happened 'when the site called out the plumber' and you would like a reliable opinion from a known and trusted person. (flattery might help)

And get him to put antifreeze in while he is up there.
