Tax On Pension.uk Or Turkey

Wonder if anyone can clarify the situation on tax on pension..we are going to live in Turkey but still have our pensions (works not state ) paid into our UK bank and therefore it will be taxed at source in the UK.
We will draw out what we need when we need it.
Is all this legal whilst living in Turkey.??? confused .com

Hi Joy,

Presumably when residing in turkey, you intend not to return to the UK for 90 days or more in any year. This step allows you to claim that you are no longer resident in the UK for tax purposes. You would then become potentially liable for Tax in Turkey.

You need to decide which format is going to be best for you, and take proper advice. Look at the tax allowances, rates etc.

Have a care though, because strictly speaking, once departed from the UK and exempt UK tax ( hooray ) you are NO LONGER entitled to health care from the NHS ( boo ). Quite how you can contribute all your life to the NHS but get nothing from it by living outside the EU is a bit beyond me, but hey, I dont make the rules.

Good luck

Thanks for your replies, the health care is one aspect i am thinking about...as i would rather pay the tax in the UK and still have access to the health service as i have medical conditions which need specialist monitoring.

I so agree with "paying all your life and then not having access to health care" not only did i pay in but i worked all my life for the NHS for peanuts.

Joy,

Really sympathise with your predicament, but there are no easy answers. Registering at a friend's address is likely to be "dodgy" , for you and potentially your friend.

May I suggest - Ask the tax man and nhs some questions and /or have a look at health providers in Turkey. These links might be of use
http://www.turkisheconomy.org.uk/insurence.html
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pensioners/taxwhenleaving.htm
( or phone HM Revenue & Customs's residency helpline on 0845 070 0040 with any tax queries. )

All the best

As far as I know being non resident does NOT exempt one from UK tax on pensions paid in the UK.
Do not worry about health care. If you get sick you return to the UK and tell a doctor that you have been living abroad but have now returned to stay. You are staying at your sister's house whilst you look for a place of your own etc etc. You are then entitled to free health care. Don't say that you are living abroad and just returning for treatment. [Of course you can change your mind later!]

Here is another useful link Directgov

as Turkey has a double tax agreement with the uk but doesn't actually tax pensions (yet) I don't believe you pay tax on your UK works pension if you are non-resident. If you look here and scroll down to Turkey you will see you get full relief on tax on your UK state and other pensions.

As you will see from the link you are limited to 91 days a tax year averaged over 4 years with a maximum of 183 days in any one year to qualify for non residency.

I'm not sure how you go back illegally? You mean, like slipping in without a passport?
Don't be silly folks, how many of us would do that?
