Long weekend in Istanbul.

Saturday night I jumped a late flight from Bodrum to Istanbul to join my wife who has been up here for a week already and got to the house about midnight.

The reason for the visit was to meet up with her brother who is on a one week visit from the States. Sunday morning we drove down to Kadikoy to pick up a hire car and return his father in laws car to him, after lunch we set of to visit some relatives who have recently lost their mother (the first of three family deaths this year). Solmaz & Isan live in a vilage named Kilyos which sounds Greek but is in fact on the Black Sea coast next to the Bosporus on the Europe side.

The significance of the area is that this is the proposed site of the notorious 3rd airport and has now been transformed into a featureless wilderness, mountains removed and Hundreds of thousands of trees removed. Concrete bridge supports everywher, dump trucks, bulldozes and excavators littering the whole are. So much money being poured down the drain (in my opinion)

The sad part is that I visited the same area two years ogo with my B-I-L and family for a wedding and it was untouched and quite beautiful in it's own way. nothing left now though.

I do have a few pictures to post but they are in my phone and it's not easy to do at the moment. If the thread is still knocking about when I get back to Bodrum, I will post them, then.

Re: Long weekend in Istanbul.

I once went horse riding on the beach at Kilyos and it is *was* incredibly beautiful, forests and an undisturbed coastline running for miles.
I haven't visited since the work for the 3rd bridge began, it's sad to know that so much destruction has taken place in one of Istanbul's last spots of untouched natural beauty.

I'm heading to Istanbul this weekend but will avoid it at all costs

Re: Long weekend in Istanbul.

Kilyos was still quiet and charming when we left in 2010, especially on a wild day in winter with a log fire in the restaurant.

Re: Long weekend in Istanbul.

There were a couple of white horse tethered on the beach but I think it was a bit cold for anybody to venture out yesterday.
