Re: UK Airport DUTY FREE - your vat refund

Ok then, for some/most things such as holiday insurance Turkey comes under the EU category, but is not actually in the EU so how would that stand with VAT at the airport?

Plus 'if' the requirement to purchase duty free goods is to show your boarding card and you refuse, will the shop also have the right to refuse to sell you the said items.

Again, the way I see it, it is a passenger no-win situation, don't show your boarding pass so don't receive any goods from the duty free department.

In the "duty free" shop there are two prices, EU and non EU. Which is why I stock up on Mothers Ruin on the way into Turkey. It's cheaper because the shop can claim back the VAT on goods going out of the EU and this is passed on to the consumer. I have no problem showing my boarding card there as it advantages me - it proves that I am going out of the EU and therefore entitled to a VAT refund.

The likes of WH Smith, Boots et al are not doing that. They are keeping the VAT refund for themselves. So where is the advantage of showing your boarding card? By not showing your boarding card you are making the country money, as the shop has to pay VAT on the transaction. Until it begins making me money I will not be showing mine.

Re: UK Airport DUTY FREE - your vat refund

But how do you know which price you are paying, Duty free or none duty free? (duty paid)

Although I did notice a reclaim office at Birmingham the last time I was there, mind you it was no where to the shops and well up towards the top end on the right-hand side, 'just past a watch shop'

But truth-be-told I have never thought about either asking if duty as in VAT was included.

Re: UK Airport DUTY FREE - your vat refund

You know which one you are getting because its the cheapest one. For example the 2 litres of gin/whisky/vodka for 20-ish is only available to travellers going outside the EU (such as Turkey). Those travelling within the EU cannot get that offer and pay a higher price. The only way to prove that it with your boarding card - so no issue there. The issue is where the likes of WHS, Boots, Dixons etc are reclaiming the VAT on items being taken out of the EU by giving boarding card details and not passing that saving onto the consumer who is getting them that saving.

Re: UK Airport DUTY FREE - your vat refund

Obviously it just goes to show I don't very often buy any duty free, I used to some time ago when I used to smoke and always bought a bottle of something or other, but the last few years have not bothered, so will have to make a point of looking next month when I go back.

Although I do usually buy a 'couple' of bottles on the return plane journey, I think the last 2 bottles of Bacardi were 10 each.

Re: UK Airport DUTY FREE - your vat refund

Been running around airports all these years chasing the old fella to give him his boarding pass so he could make his purchases thinking it was a legal requirement to produce it airside of security.
Quite shocked to discover this.

Re: UK Airport DUTY FREE - your vat refund

I always thought it odd being asked for a boarding pass when buying a Boots "Meal Deal" at the airport. I commented on this often to the assistant serving me!!!!

Re: UK Airport DUTY FREE - your vat refund

It isn't just in UK airports. Last year at Bodrum airport I was asked for my boarding card just to purchase a newspaper. I didn't have the boarding card so I was leaving the paper at the cash desk, the cashier said " OK no problem"
So they must be on the same scam there
