Re: Taking car into Turkey

Afternoon Abzlad,

Neeed you advice please on getting Customs Permission to keep our car in Turkey.

Key points as follows:

Arrived in Turkey three weeks ago after driving from U.K.

Staying at our Villa in Kalkan.

Car is Left Hand Drive .

Car was from Belgium.

Is registered in U.K. And on UK plates

We came into Turkey on tourist visa.

I had not been in the country for prior 6 months.

We had green card insurance through our U.K. Insurance company.

Myself and my wife now both have our one year Residence Permit.

Will be getting a one year Kasko insurance for the car in next few days.

We have no intention of taking the car out of Turkey until the end of the two years.

Can you please supply the contact details of the customs offices who helped get your stamps for in your passport in order to keep the car in the country and avoid fines.

Once we have contact details we will get a Turkish friend to speak to Customs and arrange an appointment to get my passport stamped.

Regards Richard.

Re: Taking car into Turkey

It actually only took two weeks from applying on line on the Thursday evening ,with appointments confirmed for the Friday morning ,and then card arrived two weeks later.

Wife's card arrived two days after mine.

Reckon they are not overworked at the moment ,and that the system is more efficient.

Also had great help from a local Turkish businessman who helps for a small fee to do the online application ,and prepares folders to take to the interview with all the relevant information.

Regards Richard

Re: Taking car into Turkey

Hi,

Personally I did customs car extension thing in Fethiye as that's where I live. It was very simple. You must have the following..

Car insurance for Turkey either purchased from within Turkey if your UK policy does not cover you for Turkey. The point Fethiye customs mentioned was that they will only extend the car visa to the length of your car insurance finish date or then end of your residence permit. Whatever finishes first. Should be insurance as it's only for one years cover.

I used some lovely ladies who sell insurance in Fethiye, they called HDI SAGORTA at the Erdine border crossing and I got six months as I didn't need more personally. HDI were the cheapest by a few hundred lira.

When you crossed into Turkey they would have given you a date for the car to leave by, for me 6 months although they did not stamp this into my passport but customs will have the information on the computer.

I got my insurance to finish on the same day as my residence permit so I don't have to keep going back to the Customs office to extend the date. It's simpler that way.

You can probably do all this in your local Customs office. Take your new residence card, insurance documents, car ownership papers, passport, proof of address in Turkey. That should do it. This service is free by the way.

Good luck

Re: Taking car into Turkey

Dear Abzlad and anyone who can help

We are from uk and entered ipsala with our UK car last May 5th 2016 intending to keep it here 2 years.

No stamp was given in passport re car entering- only our tourist visa stamps in passport.

In August we applied for a residence permit which started on 18th.

We have now decided - due to sigorta potential problems and green card issues- that I will drive back to UK next Tuesday, exiting at same border - Ipsala.

I am worried, having talked to a friend today, that I might need to have a stamp in my passport from Fethiye customs before attempting to leave?

My green cardfor Turkey and Europe is good - ends March 1st - so no sigortA problems.

If I leave at ipsala without any kind of stamp will I have a problem? Will I have a problem if I go to Fethiye customs? Bearing in mind car here just over 9 months and not over 2 years.

I am about to make a return journey to Fethiye first thing tomorrow so any advice this evening would be great!

Any help and advice greatly appreciated!!

Re: Taking car into Turkey

I replied to your personal message but I read something wrong.

When you arrived they should have given you six months but like me, I didnt know this as I also had no stamp in my passport. I only found the leave by date when I went to Fethiye customs. Even they were perplexed as why Ipsala had not put a stamp in.

Assuming they gave you six months, I hope that at some point before the six months was up, you would have already gone to Fethiye customs and extended the car visa date from the six months they should have given you until the end of your residence permit date or sigorta finish date.

If not you may already be in a little bit of trouble but you can argue that without the date stamp for the car in the passport, how could you possibly know.

This could go either way from a few hundred lira fine to them accepting they made a mistake and your OK.

Good luck and please keep us all posted

Re: Taking car into Turkey

Thank you Abzlad

So here is the latest...

Have now been to Fethiye customs on Thursday to see if they could help. Remeber there is nothing at all to advise of a get out date in my passport and we are presuming as with all the hype and press etc and our very own .gov web advice that on entering we have started a clock for a 2 year stay that will be checked on leaving again.

Any ways- The customs chap pulls up my entry details and he told me that my leave date was last August - only three months after entering. He informs me that I have overstayed 6 months. I then show him my passport and residency card (residency applied for before tourist visa ran out)

He says- Ipsala border should have given me a leave date stamp with details of the car etc in my passport. I questioned how on earth would I have known that date? He agreed and said I should mention that along with showing my 'empty' passport and residency card, thus proving I was here legally during that time and had no notification of a leave date and if I had been given a leave stamp, I would surely have taken some action to keep the car 'legal' - but for their failure to notify me I was kept in the dark completely.

Another slight odd thing - when he showed me the computer entry for my car on his screen it had the car down as a 'Jeep'. It is actually Nissan X trail and certainly not a jeep I told him.

He said- they will either let you go through or they will fine you....

He did say how irregular it was that I did not have a leave date stamp as they always give one...!

I leave this Tuesday and should hit the border early afternoon in Wednesday. Fingers crossed..

Re: Taking car into Turkey

Glad you sorted something out. Ipsala definitely made a cock up here. Is it court now?

Like I said before they never stamped mine but I happen to go to the Fethiye customs before my time was up and they were shocked at no stamp being in there. They even spoke to the big boss who was alarmed. How can we know without the stamp?

I was given 6 months on a three month tourist visa which is also a mistake. You got three months which matches your tourist visa which is correct and matches what is written in their handbook, on their website and what I mentioned in previous posts.

It seems Ipsala have a history of doing this but can work in your favour. Don't know why the hell they would not stamp it in.

Are you going to drive out now?

Please keep me posted
