Gatwick or Heathrow

It has been announced that Chris Grayling will announce at 12:30 on tue 25/10/2016 in the HOC as to the Governments current thinking.

Do readers have a view or preference as to which of the airports ( or any other suggestions made ) should be backed by the government.

My personal concern is pollution from traffic on motorways that cannot cope currently

Noise from aircraft and traffic generated

Anyone else have any concerns ?

thanks

Steve

Re: Gatwick or Heathrow

I live just a few miles from two airports, the old Birmingham airport which now takes freight only & Birmingham International. I am not on the flight paths of either (checked before buying my house). I do though have friends in two areas who are on the flight paths. Great if your a plane spotter, hell if your not. The noise when low flying during landings & take offs is unbelievable.
The problem is they built these airports "out of town" but the towns are now expanding closer to the airports. Talks underway for another runway for Birmingham, I expect protests over that proposal.
Heathrow would be my idea but on saying that, I'm not on their flight paths either.

Agree. The idea that you have to get down to Gatwick for flights is absurd. The stupidity of flights having to come in to Heathrow over the centre of London is crazy.

Move a lot more International traffic out to Birmingham, Manchester and the North, rather than putting the concentration on the most congested part of the country.

Re: Gatwick or Heathrow

If your doing business in London then that's where you want to fly into, nobody wants to get off a plane then do two or three hours further travel.
We live in a digital world, spread the business & spread the cash around the country . It needs businesses to spread its wings first into the Midlands & the North.

Agree, but holiday flights might go from anywhere. I have no idea how many of the millions of passengers are attending business meetings in London, but if UK or Europe is the end destination then other airports might do it better and free up space in Heathrow.

Planes should not, imho, be flying over cities.

Birmingham International (BHI) to London Euston 1hr 10mins train is quicker than Heathrow to Central London by tube

Re: Gatwick or Heathrow

Manchester already has 2 runways and ever growing number of expensive long haul flights, we have poor connections with Gatwick though as BA dropped the shuttle a couple of years ago.
We now find it easier to fly to Schipol and go long haul from there, it is also substantially cheaper. We recently priced some business class flights starting in Manchester going to Barbados, with BA it was 2400 each, the same dates via Schipol actually routed through Heathrow on the same BA flight, days and times exactly the same, were 1800 each. I have priced similar on different days to other long haul destinations and generally there is a saving to be had so the personal economic considerations would need to be taken into account.
I have been told its to do with the taxes at UK airports, but thats a massive difference so for me Im not really that bothered as I will try to avoid either.
If I was being selfish I would choose Heathrow as we can shuttle there.

Re: Gatwick or Heathrow

Apparently it will be about another ten years until such a runway is built, based on the current snails pace of decision making, during which time the so called new capacity it will allow for would have been surpassed anyway. Dithering seems to be the mainstay of decision making.

That's train time, shuttle from the airport to the station then waiting for the train, it mounts up. One of my sons does BIS every morning to Northampton & hits train problems regularly.
