Bodrum for the Day

Am picking up my son from the airport and looking for tips re spending the day around the Bodrum area. For example best beach area to aim for ? Also is Datca a car drive worth doing - can stretch the trip to 2 days if worth doing. Tips, advice and/ or recommendations would be welcome.

Much would depend on the age of your son, are you into ancient sites at all?

my son is 32 - he is flying in from New Zealand approx 9pm tomorrow. The post was really for me - somewhere to enjoy in the sun which is handy and not too far from the airport. Datca has always appealed but realise it is a bit messy to get to. A nice beach or a scenic drive and a lazy walk around would suit me.

Datca is a long drive from Bodrum, better to take the ferry which is still doing same day returns, as far as I know. Or, ferry one way, explore the peninsula along to Knidos, overnight in Datca, then drive along the peninsula to Marmaris and back to Bodrum.

We always enjoyed a day out visiting Heraklia on lake bafa with lunch in Iasos 28m from Milas.

There is another site just to the left of the main road as you travel from Izmir to Milas but I cannot remember its name, it is just before the turn off to Iassos.

I have just read up about the Datca peninsula and it does appeal I must say. I would have an overnight in Datca or Marmaris rather than doing it in one day from Bodrum. How are the road surfaces and is there a coastal road right round the peninsula?

There is only 1 road along the peninsula, running from Marmaris to Knidos, with side roads down to different villages. From the Bodrum ferry along to Knidos, returning via Palamut Buku (exquisitely coloured sea!and several nice restaurants) along the beach to the coast road and Mesudiye, again along the beach and the left to Hyatt Buku, finishing in Datca is a great tour that I always do with my visitors. Overnight in Datca, lots of different hotels and pansiyons to choose from, good restaurants include Café Inn, Emek Restaurant and Culinarium, best bar is Pica in the harbour. Next day along the road to Maramaris, the road having SPECTACULAR views, with switchbacks between the Aegean and the Med.

Datca is still relatively unspoiled, despite a huge expansion in building. Quite unlike most of the resorts, and still completely Turkish.
