Be careful with dashcam use abroad. They are illegal in some countries.

Re: Driving to Turkey 2018

Well as I stated in an earlier thread "its easy to miss something". Thanks Sybil you have probably saved me a fine in Austria. Thought the dashcam might record scenic views of the Alps. Have to use a camera I guess.

Will now check for the other countries on my route.

Re: Driving to Turkey 2018

Hi
We are driving over from The Hook of Holland to Didim and wonder if anyone has had issues at borders with bribes etc.(Serbia, Bulgaria etc). We will have a full car mainly bedding, kitchen equipment, (not New) and personal clothing. We did consider using the Venice Ferry to Igoumenista and then drive but have read so many bad reviews of the over night ferry about camping outside your cabin, noise and hardly being able to walk in gangways that we have decided to drive. I wonder if anyone has done the Venice to Igoumenista crossing this time of year (Jan)?
Thanks

Re: Driving to Turkey 2018

We have used the ferry from Ancona to Igoumenitsa numerous times and although I have seen people sleeping in the lounges and on on occasion on the upper deck in sleeping bags, I have never seen people sleeping outside of cabins and have never seen corridors blocked.
We have travelled in April, May and September when I would have thought there would be more passengers but have never seen what you are suggesting.
I think that is the problem with reviews you can never be sure they are factual!

We did it a few years back in January, check the weather forecast. We battled snow in the UK, France shut the autobahn down whilst we were on it due to treacherous conditions. Luckily we had a full tank of diesel & a flask of coffee, reopened a 5am. Switzerland there was snow everywhere but the good old Swiss had the roads cleared. Italy was a frigging nightmare. Got off their autobahn at 4pm at a place called Reggia just before they closed it. Booked into a hotel, then had to dig the car out in the morning. Tried to get onto the autobahn but it was closed..........back to the hotel. The receptionist came to us at 3pm to say it was open, at which time I was over the limit (purely to keep the cold out). Next day all roads clear down to Ancona, ferry into Greece, snow there but roads clear. Snow virtually right up till we were near Izmir.

As said, check the weather, makes sure you have a full tank, de-icer in your wiper bottled & send me 10 for marking your card.
Enjoy the trip..........

Re: Driving to Turkey 2018

Thank you for that. WE will be using the Venice to Igoumenista ferry and wondered what that might be like this time of year?
I appreciate that reviews can be a double edged sword so just wanted to canvas any others opinions.

Re: Driving to Turkey 2018

Hi and thank you for your reply. As we are travelling from The Hook of Holland we will not have to touch any roads in France or Switzerland, going via Germany and into Italy to Venice Ferry Port. Hoping then to get the ferry to Igoumenista.
I know there will be snow for much of this journey but we are planning on making it a holiday so no rush as such. My main concern as to the ferry was from previous reviews about conjested gangways and stairwells with people camping outside the cabin doors. Hopefully this time of year that might not be the case but wondered what the ferry was like?
