Turkish Driving Licence

Hello Guys Is it a requirement to get a Turkish driving licence or do you still use your UK licence ?

I have been spot checked several times by police but just show my passport or residency permit which they seem to accept ??? But what is the Turkish law on this ?

From Doc Martin's site https://docmartinssurgeryforexpatsin...ic-scoots-etc/
Not having a Turkish Driving License (or a noterised copy of your UK License if applicable) may not get picked up at a police check but it certainly would if you were involved in an accident.

Re: Driving Licence

Hi Tony
You can use your UK licence provided it is notorised and translated for 6 months at a time , after that you need either a trip back to the UK or go on a day trip to a Greek isle to get a fresh entry stamp
To get a Turkish licence you have to have an ORIGINAL school leaving certificate (This seems to be a big stumbling block, as a lot of people don't have one and the Gov website you get redirected to to try and get a copy is absolute crap )

Re: Driving Licence

There is a change to TR Driving Licences this year, I am told. At the end of the year I will have to renew mine for a modern version. Dont know much more than that.

Re: Driving Licence

I renewed mine a few months ago along with my kimlik, it just involved an hour visit to the nufus.
I've given up caring what the rules are for Brits most people here seem to make their own rules. All the best to all the law breakers here.

Re: Driving Licence

Thanks for the replies. I do travel in and out of Turkey quite often so guess Im covered by the 6 month rule ? I never thought about a licence in the event of an accident - which is possible with all my trips in and out of Istanbul.
Im going to give it a go on Wednesday and Im hoping that because I have a work permit which I had to supply proof of qualifications I wont need to get my original school leaving cert ???

I will keep you informed on my success - Or not.

Re: Driving Licence

The other issue with the licences is comprehensive insurance. WE recently had to make a claim (stone cracked the windscreen). The insurance company needed a copy of passport with latest entry stamp to prove that we had not been in the country more than 6 months using a UK licence. if we had been they would not have paid out. i had only returned to turkey a week earlier, so was fine. This is the third claim that I have translated for at various service centres for Brits, all have asked to see the entry stamp.
