driving to Istanbul

We are considering taking a risk and booking a flight from istanbul to minsk, then a connecting flight to London. I am aware that there could be last minute cancellation, but that's a risk we are willing to undertake. The problem we have is where or who do get permission to travel by car from fethiye to Istanbul. We have a turkish friend who is willing to take us to Istanbul in our car and bring the car back to our house in fethiye. The only information I can gather from the f&c is that we need permission from the authorities but no link to follow. Anybody who can give me a direct link would be appreciated.
Regards.
Russ.

Re: driving to Istanbul

Any police station could give you a travel permit but not so easy.

We asked them for permission to drive from Trabzon>Istanbul to catch a flight Ė refused.

It could help if you showed them that you have purchased air ticket but still no guarantee, itís a Catch 22.

Itís still brass monkeys in Trabzon and on Friday our gas system went pear shaped, no heating, hot water etc and the police wouldnít give a permit for the maintenance guy to come to us.

My only suggestion would be to tell the British Consulate that the police are hampering the return of a Brit citizen to his home country and then tell the police that you have done so.

Re: driving to Istanbul

Our turkish friend is taking us to the local governship tomorrow to get our travel permits, we are reluctant to purchase airline tickets prior to travel permission been given, in case travel permission is refused. If we knew for sure that travel restrictions were going to be lifted within the next couple of months, then we could work around that and sit here and enjoy the warm weather. But beyond two months would cause problems for our business in the UK. This is why we feel that it is necessary to make an effort to return ASAP.
Thanks for the replies.
regards.

Me being me I would be sorely tempted to Photoshop tickets that could be shown to the authorities

The problem with country hopping, you just donít know what youíre walking into, restrictions are happening daily & what people face in one country could be harsher once youíre in transit.
I think if I was safe where I was then thatís where I would remain....frying pan, fire comes to mind.

I wish you well though along with the many thousands in the same position as you.

This from facebook

Flight update – British Airways:

Seats are available on a direct British Airways flight from Istanbul to London Heathrow on Saturday 18th April.

Tickets can be purchased on the British Airways website (www.britishairways.com) or their mobile application.

If you are travelling from outside of Istanbul, are aged over 65 or under 20, you will require a travel permit. To do so, submit your request here: (www.gov.uk/contact-consulate-ankara) . You should make clear in the subject box that you are enquiring about a permit to travel, and have proof of your onward journey out of Turkey.

You are responsible for arranging your own transport to the airport.

Re: driving to Istanbul

russnlyn, the flight Chris295 states is full .Your only option now is the Minsk flight on the 15th .
My other thought aside from the flight is that you say your Turkish friend is going to drive your car back from Istanbul. Is it on 'M' yabaci number plates?. If so it's illegal for him to drive it & will definitely be caught at the road blocks & your car will be impounded until the registered owner can collect it upon paying a fine.
You can also apply to your Kaymakams office for a travel permit.
