Oh okay I see. This is why I'm really trying to make sure everything is in order before going. The employer is a well known university so I'm hoping everything is legit. And no I have a US passport.

Re: Entering Turkey without physical work permit

There are 2 ways to get working permission for Turkey.
1]...If you are out of the country, then your prospective employer sends a notice of employment in your name. You go to the Turkish Consulate in your country & they after about 8 weeks if your application is accepted, will issue you with a Work VISA stamp into your passport. This Work VISA allows you to enter Turkey without a tourist visa & start working for your employer. Within days of arriving in Turkey your Work PERMIT card should be in your hands.

2]...If you're already in Turkey, first you need a valid Residence Permit. Your prospective employer applies to the Ministry of labour for your Work Permit & card.
These are the only two ways to work here legally.
No way can an employer make an application to the Ministry by themselves here for a Work PERMIT while you're abroad without you holding a valid residence permit.

Google this & read the info on legal sites, even Agents who 'guarantee' to get Work Permits for foreigners, you'll see the system is as i've stated.

Yes it is correct that I only have a work permit and not work visa. I will definitely ask my employer about this. If I am issued a work visa it should be similar to the tourist visa, in that there is an official email with a barcode or QR code and I can make a copy of it in addition to being in the system, because I would want physical proof as well, just in case. But I would also like to be able to check online that I am in the system.

Re: Entering Turkey without physical work permit

If you get a Tourist Visa and your employer has done everything you expect, at worst you have spent a few dollars you did not need to. If there is a problem, you have the length of the Tourist Visa (3 months) to sort it out.

Yes this is what I'm hoping. As long as there isn't any issues with immigration and getting into the country, I wouldn't mind even if I needed to work out any issues that might exist with the work permit once I'm there.

Re: Entering Turkey without physical work permit

OK. But just going back to the point made earlier (post 17 &22), do not work without the correct paperwork. It is a well-known scam to attract foreign workers, promising the earth, and the reality is very different; educational establishments were some of the worst offenders, where people ended up working illegally (with no rights or recourse to law) and without pay, then being cast aside at the end of their usefulness. Tread carefully and have a back-up plan if it all turns to dust.

Azul90,
As people have said be very cautious in Turkey. People promise the earth, give you the wonderful Turkish smile and when it all goes wrong...........
Misplaced trust has cost people a fortune.
The Turkish people are wonderfully friendly but they usually tell you what you want to hear!
