You can't beat a Menamen

As I was just thinking about supper tonight and wondering where my "Marigolds" were it reminded me of the nice menamen I whipped up the other night. It's a nice quick, cheap and easy dish at any time but please be AWARE of the Aci Biber!! Generally I am not adverse to a hot pepper inadvertently sneaking it's way into the Kilo of succulent fresh green ones but when I shopped the other day at Migros I was mortified to find that I had bought a whole kilo of the hot ones! It wasn't until I had cut through three of the blighters, touched my face and neck and discovered an old healing nick to my finger had opened and began to bleed again did I realise. No amount of cold water to the face and neck area could calm the burning (it takes it's own time) and when the "partner" realised what was happening he calmly suggested that he had gone off the idea of an early night!!!

Re: You can't beat a Menamen

If it happens again, slap yoghurt on it. Something to do with the fat in yoghurt that helps to neutralise the enzymes. Apparently works with cream or full fat milk too.

What is menamon - what is in it - does it have a fried egg on the top?

Re: You can't beat a Menamen

My Menamen recipe for two people

1 Medium onion
2 Medium Tomatoes
2/3 Green peppers
2 Large Eggs
1 clove garlic (or as much as you like to use)
1 tsp Sweet paprika
1 tsp Cumin
1 tsp tomato paste
1 cay glass water

Chop onion, tomatoes and green peppers into small pieces and saute (fry) on medium heat in Olive Oil until soft. Add pinch of salt and black pepper to season. Add chopped (or crushed) garlic. Add the seasoning (paprika, cumin and tomato paste). Add a little water at a time (enough to make sauce for dipping your bread in) When you are happy with the consistency, crack two
eggs into the mixture and stir as if making scrambled egg (personally I like to leave them sunny side up cos I like runny yolks. Voila there you have it.

Eat with nice crustly bread. Turkish tradition is to share this dish in the pan it was cooked in! Helps when it comes to washing up.

I hope you enjoy.

Re: You can't beat a Menamen

KKOB - Happy Birthday to you - I hope you had a good day. I don't like birthdays much and the older I get when people ask "how are you" I often just say "that I am very happy because I WOKE UP THIS MORNING!!"

Anyway thanks for the Yoghurt tip - forgot about that. I once did this for sun burn but it made a terrible mess of the bed linen and the next morning there was a funny aroma!!

Luckycat, why are you shouting, as you keep using capital letters in your post.

Looked up the recipe for Meleman as you call it and no recipe for it came up.

Looked up Menamen and it states it is a Turkish dish of eggs with onion, green pepper and tomato. It can be served as a breakfast or luncheon dish.

Thanks for the recipe Bubskar going to make that for my hubbies lunch today.

Susan

Re: You can't beat a Menamen

Didnt know that capitals mean " shouting " - sorry

And we always call it Meleman in our part of Turkey where my Hubby comes from
And its also on our menu as Meleman and our Turkish customers ask for Meleman

I stand corrected Susan
