What is it?

When we were over in Turkey recently we bought some honey from a stall by the side of the road. The girl who we bought it from was also selling bags of what looked like dried, black broad beans. Because I picked them up to look at them she gave them to me, so I now have them sitting in a cupboard.

So two questions really, what are they, and what do I do with them?

Thanks

Re: What is it?

Most likely to be carob, we have a tree in our garden
they taste vaguely like chocolate if you chew them.
they are mainly harvested and used as flavoring in
colas I believe. they harvest them co operatively in our
village and I believe they comand quite a good price

Re: What is it?

If they are carob beans, I believe they use them to make diabetic chocolate. They grow in abundance in Mallorca too

Hi,

They are Carobs. If you snap one in half then take a lit match to the broken end and burn it-there is a very strong smell of chocolate.

The Turks make 'Pekmez' from boiling Carobs and making a thick dark syrup-I think it's an acquired taste.

The seeds are a great treat for dogs.

It's where the "carat" measure for gems and precious metals originated. The seeds were thought to be a uniform weight and were used on scales for weighing.

Re: What is it?

Did you exchange the family cow for those beans?
And did your mother throw them angrily out of the window when you got home?
