Smile Favorite Turkish Food

Merhaba all,

My name is Cenk, I moved from Istanbul to the US last year. One thing that has been driving me crazy is how hard it is to find my favorite Turkish foods here. This gave me an idea, Im bringing in a bunch of my favorite foods from Turkey and sending them out to people every month - sort of like a little taste of home.

So far people seem to really like the packages, and its a great way to reconnect with Turkey if you miss home as much as I do. Id love to get your thoughts on any products youd love to see included, or anything from home you especially miss.

Thanks!
Cenk

Re: Favorite Turkish Food

You could always learn to cook them, I am sure that all the basic ingredients are available in the US, then you really have a business plan.

I think that this is very sad. It's true that the food in many tourist resorts is poor quality but there are certainly excellent restaurants in Turkey and very good quality fresh food.

Re: Favorite Turkish Food

Last week I watched a program with Rick Stein driving around the Greek islands sampling the food, and what a variety of food there was, It was like that in Bodrum at one time with some of the best eateries being around the bus stations.
Over nearly 30 years I have witnessed that variety disappear from Turkish cafes and restaurants and I do miss it, it seems to be about kofte, pide, lahmacun and shish these days often with salad and chips and maybe some rice, I dont blame places for going after the international market but it does leave the traditional stuff as more of a rarity, Maybe im hankering after the past it was certainly more interesting then and less predictable.

Re: Favorite Turkish Food

Well this fella loves Turkish food....................along with English, Italian, Chinese ect
Basically I just love food.
Me being the cheeky sod & my wife being a good cook, if we had a nice Turkish dish we would eat it, then go back a few days later. This time though my wife would ask to go into their kitchen & watch them prepare it.............she is now quite accomplished on Turkish cuisine. Other than that, YouTube has it all.

Re: Favorite Turkish Food

I remember a restaurant in Turkbuku back in the early 90s, it was called Alarga, this was before the rich Istanbullus discovered Turkbuku, they used to have a fixed menu with lots of cold and warm starters, mainly fish based. absolutely delightful.

Re: Favorite Turkish Food

for me, the best thing to eat in Turkey is sea bass with the skin all crispy and the flesh moist and melt in the mouth served with rocket salad - apart from that I like the Turkish mezes and the type of dishes served in lokantas

Re: Favorite Turkish Food

Around Bodrum in the late eighties, early nineties there was lots of locanta's selling traditional Turkish food . One of the nicest meals we had was after a day swimming at Yali Ciflic beach. We stopped at a typical Turkish restaurant / locanta who only served chicken dishes, along with typical meze dishes .
We had mixed meze starters, three different chicken dishes, four beers , half bottle raki and the obligatory bread and water. We finished off the meal with cay, I made the excuse of needing the toilet and asked for and paid the bill .
When I was told it was iki yuz eli bin lira I checked with the owner " no, I want to pay for everybody" he assured me it was for everybody. When Ozan started to get up to pay I told him I had already paid , he asked what I had paid , when I told him he replied " he's robbed you because you're a yabanci, I would never pay that much. At the time 250,000lira equated to 5.00 for a meal that was one of the best I have had in Turkey.
