turkish proverbs ..with english translations

here are some turkish proverbs ...although a lot are in a universal idiom still there are many that are unique to Turkish thinking

Okuz altinda buzagi aranmaz.
Do not search for a calf under an ox.

Havlayan kopek isirmaz.
The dog that barks much does not bite.

Vakitsiz oten horozun basini keserler.
The **** that crows at the wrong time is killed.

Yenilen pehlivan gurese doymaz.
A defeated wrestler is not tired of wrestling.

Ofke ile kalkan zararla oturur.
He who gets up (starts up) in anger, sits down with a loss.

Esek hosaftan ne anlar (anlamaz).
An ass does not appreciate fruit compote.

Ne ekersen, o'nu bicersin.
You harvest what you sow.

Bilmemek ayip degil, sormamak ayip.
It is not disgraceful to ask, it is disgraceful no to ask.

Bekarlik sultanliktir.
There is no soverinity like bachelorhood.

Sinek kucuktur, ama mide bulandirir.
The fly is small, but it is big enough to make one sick.

Kuzguna yavrusu sahin gorunur.
The raven sees its chickens as falcons.

Ignegi kendine batir cuvaldizi baskasina.
Stick the needle into yourself (to see how it hurts) before you thrust the packing-needle into others.

Kurtlu baklanin kor alicisi olur.
The buyer of the rotten beans is the blind man.

Suruden ayrilan koyunu kurt kapar.
The sheep separated from the flock is eaten by the wolf.

Ates dustugu yeri yakar.
An ember burns where it falls.

Cabuk parlayan cabuk soner.
What flares up fast, extinguishes soon.

Sakinilan goze cop batar.
An over-protected eye gets the speck (Being overly careful invites misfortunes).

Insan yedisinde ne ise yetmisinde de odur.
What a man is at seven is also what he is at seventy.

Agac yas iken egilir.
The green twig is easily bent.

Terzi kendi sokugunu dikemezmis.
Frincinin cocugu ac dolasirmis.
The shoemaker's child goes barefoot.
The baker's child goes hungery.


Bir tasla iki kus vurmak...
Killing two birds with one stone.

Bir elin nesi var, iki elin sesi var.
Two heads are better than one.

This is one we used to use a lot.......and we'd always laugh when we would say i, it got to the point where we would just the the first two words.....

Kuzguna yavrusu sahin gorunur.
The raven sees its chickens as falcons


(it was in regars to our children when they were babies....)
