For those who are currently living in Turkey on an expired visa

There was a law that passed back in April that allows you to get a residence permit if you have overstayed your visa and are still living in Turkey. I overstayed my visa by nearly 3 and a half years and finally got my situation resolved and I know that if someone else knew of a solution I would appreciate them telling everyone about it, so I thought I should share.

First, you need to go to a police station or talk to the police at a port of entry and have them calculate exactly how much you owe for your overstay fee and then pay it down to the last penny. Depending on where you are, you may need to pay your fee at a tax office. Once you have paid, you will leave the country for at least 24 hours and then come back. When you return you will sign a paper saying that you acknowledge that the only reason you are allowed back in is because you are planning on getting a residence permit and will make an appointment to get one within 10 days of reentering Turkey (note that you only need to make an appointment within those 10 days. The actual appointment date does NOT need to be within those 10 days, which is good considering the closest appointment date may be a few months away).

There are some documents you will need to have in order to get your residence permit. When you fill out your appointment form online, you will be given a list of things you’ll need. It’s okay to fill out the form and get an appointment before you have all the documents since you will be able to get them while waiting for the appointment date to arrive and it’s better to get an appointment sooner rather than later. Just tick each little box next to the documents listed so that you can continue on to the next page of the form.

I can't post URLs in my posts yet, but go to e-randevu (dot) iem (dot) gov (dot) tr in order to make an appointment for a residence permit online. Be sure to click on the area of the site that says "Yabancılar şube müdürlüğü e-randevu".

I believe you’re only able to do this until the end of this year.

Surprisingly, not much considering how long I overstayed. I anticipated something around 4,000 liras, ended up being only 970 liras.

Thanks for sharing that elvee.

Just wondered if the thought of being locked-up or/and being deported ever crossed your mind.

On that basis, 970 TL for 3 and half years, makes you wonder if it's worth bothering with doing an RP at all. Just stay and be prepared to pay the fine if/when you leave. Don't know that I could sleep though for fear of being yanked off to the airport at a moments notice.

Oh, this definitely isn't the solution for everyone. If someone is here on an expired visa and they don't really care about being deported and/or banned for a while, then they probably shouldn't go through with this. This is more of a solution for someone who is here illegally and wants to stay in Turkey for a while and possibly start a life here, whether it's because Turkey is a better option than staying in their home country or if they're like me, they have a Turkish fiance/partner and want to live here with them but made a few mistakes and somehow overstayed.

I wasn't being serious Elvee, so glad you got sorted rather than deported. Now you can enjoy your life in Turkey.
