Turkish Prisons please help

Hi,

I am in England and my Turkish boyfriend has been sentenced to 6 months in prison. He is currently in a closed prison in Istanbul.
Could anyone tell me please how the Turkish prison systems work? Will he be able to go to an open prison after a few weeks? And also will he serve just half his sentence as over here?

I am desperate for any information at this horrible time. Many thanks

Re: Turkish Prisons please help

Normally they serve all the sentence. Only visitors allowed who are Turkish citizens. He can be transferred without notice to anywhere in Turkey. Some prisons have work and some don't. Some can make and receive phone calls after the first few weeks.

Re: Turkish Prisons please help

Hi Rae2.For what I have been told prisons here in Turkey are not for the faint hearted.I think if you mention prisons and Turkey the first think that comes to mind is Midnight Express.Sadly for your boyfriend, they are nothing like British prisons. He will get parole as my friend calls it but nothing like as lenient as in the UK,depending on his crime.Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but I didn't think you needed to hear the sarcastic and flippant remark's like someone has given you here on this thread.Hope all goes well for you and him.

Re: Turkish Prisons please help

Many years ago when I came over to Turkey I was told by a Turk that going to prison was a big issue for the family, a dishonour, and that families would/could disown that person. Whether this be true or not I am unsure and if it were maybe attitudes have changed since then.
All I am saying is that prison could be the issue for the next 6 months when he comes out then potentially he could have further issues with the outside world that he once knew

Re: Turkish Prisons please help

Not here to judge & you have my sympathies.

I knew a Turk who got a prison sentence & without a doubt he deserved every day he served.

This piece of cr*p was married to an English woman. Whilst driving one day there was a road check & he was arrested on the spot, it was shock & horror to everyone. He got tucked away in Soke Prison & told his the English wife that it was down to a fight a few of years back. From the onset of meeting this guy I never liked him, he was in my mind everything bad about some Turkish fellas rolled into one.

Anyway, I got talking to a Turkish friend who was in the police because the English woman was at a complete loss as to what he had done. My friend checked him out. He had ripped an English woman for thousands & with the added touch of kicking the living daylights out of her on the way out, the two years he got was a pittance.

Once in Soke Prison the financial demands on his wife became more & more. He told her he had to buy all his food & contribute towards the prison guards wages. So every week she was slinging money to him. After about 6 months he was transferred to an open prison but told his wife that she had to pay for the transfer fees which included the guards wages. She paid.

Once at the open prison she then receive a lllllllooooooooonnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg list of what he needed including sunglasses, sports leisure wear, here's the catch. He told her that all of the "gear" had to be proper branded & if any of it was dodgy stuff he would get extra time !!!!

Well it went on & on, the woman was a friend of my wife's, of course my attitude was, "bloody tell her". You know how it works, she would tell my wife bits who would then tell me :-) So the story/scam or whatever just rolled along UNTIL !!!!!!

She landed at our place one day bordering on a nervous breakdown. He had supposedly been threatened in prison & needed 1k putting into someone's bank account. As she was telling us I could see the look in my wife's eyes, one of those DONT YOU DARE looks............I dared & it was so right to do so. It turns out the woman had her suspicions but had nobody to confide in (A) in case she was wrong. (B) could she have been so stupid.................for me she was neither.

Well the top n tale is, she divorced the tw*t, it never ended there though. During the divorce proceeding he tried to get half of her monies & her property.............he lost, he also lost on appeal.

As I said at the start, " not here to judge & you have my sympathies". When posts like yours come on TLF it gives you hopefully what you need re the prison system but it also warns others over what they might be experiencing.

I wish you & your fella the very best.

Ps. Just to clarify something because I know people make distinctions. The guy I am on about was a TURK & not a KURD. He had nothing but contempt for Kurds calling them terrorists & thieves................hence the start of my dislike of him.

Re: Turkish Prisons please help

I have a friend who was married to a Turkish chap who served time in prison. He did manage to get education in prison and was given some time on parole. Do not believe all the Midnight express stuff.

Re: Turkish Prisons please help

Use his six months porridge as an excuse to get rid or him. This is the best piece of advice you will get. Don't say nobody warned you!

P.S. Has he asked you for any money yet?
