vacuum packing for flight?

can anyone tell me if they used those bags -that that have all the air sucked out by a vacuum- to pack clothes and bedding to bring to Turkey.

It probably is a daft question but - are they alright to put in your luggage in the hold?

Thanks
Gill

Re: vacuum packing for flight?

Yes I've used them, they are good. No probs with them. They make your suitcase twice as heavy as you can squeeze in twice as much!!! I made the mistake of buying the wrong size you can get suitcase sized ones, mine were a bit big and had to fold them in half.

Hi Gill, Yeah no problem using them although the last time i went to Turkey one of them was open but the pressure of other linen and the lid kept everything in place.

Re: vacuum packing for flight?

I use them every time i come back from the states. I love watching it go from a large size down to nothing.....but as Kapluma has pointed out, it does make your suitcase twice as heavy. And be careful, cause they are really watching on overweight bags and charging you for it.
But I love them............they are pretty nifty.....

Re: vacuum packing for flight?

Great idea...Unless some one wants to search your suitcase! Unless you happen to carry a vacum cleaner in your hand luggage

Re: vacuum packing for flight?

well... in all the time that I have traveled back and forth to the US, they have searched my suitcase (I think cause it is always so heavy) but they leave the bags intact. and then leave a nice note saying they searched my bag......LOL when they pass it through the exray machine, if they see something suspicious, then they open it, well, i think when they open mine and see that I have everything but the kitchen sink in there, they just close it up as fast as they can.....

the problem is that if you have anything that might puncture it while the bag is being thrown around...then you can imagine what happens.......

good luck

Hi

I found the bags particularly useful when we moved from one villa to another and our stuff was in storage over the winter - they kept everything smelling fresh and mould free (even though we had to store our stuff in an incomplete unheated villa!)

Re: vacuum packing for flight?

I am not sure but I think someone put a posting about vacuum packing, using some other kind of bag when you cannot buy the vacuum bags, on the forum but cannot find it.

Have tried a black dustbin bag and a bit of hose pipe and sucked the air out with my hoover it works great, BUT as soon as I tape it all up the air slowly creeps back in.

Any ideas what sort of bag I could use?
