Sending gifts to Turkey from UK...

Hello,

I need some help and advice on posting some gifts to Turkey from the UK. I have been trying to find out information about what is and isn't allowed through customs, but haven't been very successful. I even tried e-mailing the Turkish Post office (PTT) but their response is neither here nor there...

Basically, I want to send some chocolates, perfume, and a lava lamp to a friend in Izmir. I was told but friend that perfume may not be allowed, and the lava lamp might also be a problem as it contains liquid?

Anyone can help me out here? Would it be cheaper an easier to just send her some money so she can buy these in Turkey! if so what's the best method to send money abroad? say £100?

Cheers

Re: Sending gifts to Turkey from UK...

I have heard of people receiving gifts through the post unscathed, but my personal experience was a bit of a nightmare.

The post office made us pick the package up from central Izmir sorting office, I live slightly outside Izmir. This was a hassle because we had to locate the office and make the journey in to town, simply to collect the package that we thought would be delivered. Once we claimed the package (which was in my daughters name, and we both had to prove ID as parents to claim it) we found the box severely damaged, and some of the goods inside broken (though the champagne made it intact, the whiskey didn't) the box was also packed with chocolate and cookies. Nothing was missing, and we didn't pay any extra in tax, but an awful lot was damaged and it seemed obvious that someone had gone through the box.
I personally wouldn't buy/pack and send any breakable gifts, but perhaps you could order gifts through an online shop, and then the responsibility is possibly theirs.

Hello there, thanks for the reply, and sorry about your package. It does sound sending stuff there is a hit and miss affair. I don't even know where to begin to look for a lava lamp in Turkey! unfortunately I don't know anyone going there or live there (apart from my friend I want to surprise).

How about sending money? Is it pretty straight forward? I heard PayPal can do international transfers, but now sure how she will receive it as she doesn't even know PayPal I must look into this.

Re: Sending gifts to Turkey from UK...

Receiving gifts seems very hit and miss. I have told all my friends and family to stop sending anything. Anyone who insists on sending a present does it through gift vouchers like Amazon. Packets labelled with a company name like Amazon or LandsEnd always get through with no problem.
