Safety of Forum Members

I worry about the content of some posts. More accurately, I worry about the careless insults aimed at the Turkish President. Today we have his image morphing into that of Hitler. Regular insults are aired presumably by those who feel distant from the society we discuss on this forum

For anyone living in, or intending to visit Turkey, these insults are, in my opinion very risky. There are journalists, cartoonists and even children in prison for doing far less.

In my opinion they put the forum and its owner at risk, and draw scrutiny from security services. Just because it is in English does not grant anonymity.

Just my humble opinion.

Ian

Re: Safety of Forum Members

I feel the same way Ian and have done since the summer of 2013.
There is a difference between freedom of speech and lunacy. I have put myself at risk since joining this forum by identifying my location from the start. Perhaps yuu can now see why I have been angered by things being made worse for me by others.

Dear old Shirlrey was becoming aware of this situation not long before she died. Maybe it's time to disassociate myself from this forum.

Re: Safety of Forum Members

Imho , for action to be taken by Turkey , against a visiting holidaymaker would cause both media and political uproar.

The holiday trade would never survive.

Artee cares nothing for our unworthy kuffar opinions , his God has ordained him , who are we in comparison.

The ridicule and scorn that goes his way on American fora , from expat Turks , is huge , his bureaucracy would never hope to cope with monitoring it.

Steve some of us live here!
Totally agree with Ian and Pete.
For to long some members have been using this forum for political purposes whilst others have been pushing an anti muslim agenda. Both of which, I find unexceptable.
A little more self censorship is needed or we could find the TLF is closed down or worse!

Re: Safety of Forum Members

İ think there is a thin line between valid criticism and portraying someone whose beliefs and ideals you do not share as demonic. The internet allows people to go far beyond what they would normally deem acceptable. Also some posters seem to have a one track mind on certain issues and whilst this may or may not threaten other users of the site it certainly prevents balanced discussion. İ find myself spending less time on the forum and frequently closing it down due to the vitriolic contents of some postings.

Another musing - how many of the forum members live in Turkey?

Re: Safety of Forum Members

Not the response I expected from my original post, my point was to highlight a Turkish political gaffe, not to make Erdogan / Hitler comparisons per se. The title "Uber Alles" [Over all] seems to me to be an ironic lampoon of Erdogans aim with the new constitution.
That being such, I understand the safety fears, maybe not to me personally, but to our Turkish forum ex pats and the forum in general and would be fine with the threads removal.

Way-back Machine? Anything posted on here can be found whether deleted or not.
What was started as innocent fun is now a potential danger.

The presence of this forum has been noted in the national press on several occasions.

The message here is now similar to the war years in Britain'The Walls have Ears'

Not my intention but merely wish to draw attention to the manner of some postings and also to the fact that many of the poster do not live in Turkey and as stated seem hell bent on an anti İslamic agenda. And before anyone asks - no İ am not a Muslim nor do İ support the AK party but would welcome rational, informed and balanced discussion on issues and not vitriolic tirades.

Re: Safety of Forum Members

I have moved the thread to the Mods area for Mushtaq to have a look at, its his decision as to whether itreturns to the mainstream.
