Another nail in the coffin

I see in in the online UK Telegraph that expats outside that's EEA ( that involves those of us who are living in Turkey) legislation is coming in that not only will we be charged for NHS treatment in hospital and for GPs but on top of that there will be a punitive 50% extra charge.

Re: Another nail in the coffin

Probably because like it or not, we are not entitled to it.
Obviously many people who live here permanently do go back for treatment, consultations and even pre planned operations and quote the oft repeated mantra of we have paid into it all our lives and we are entitled to it.
Deep down they know they are not entitled to it after choosing to live in another country.
Ironically the same people are often the most avid complainers about "foreigners" draining the NHS and "stealing our jobs"...often voicing their opinions from a barstool in a foreign pub.

I fail to understand why anyone would opt to return to the dubious care of the NHS when there are excellent medical facilities in Turkey.

Re: Another nail in the coffin

Yes exactly Jaycey.

If the grass is greener, stay there. Don't come running back to the UK for free treatment and a (near-fluent) English speaking doctor.

I have always maintained that the Turkish health service is far superior to that of the NHS. You can actually get seen, get test results and request certain tests be done on the same day...almost like you're in charge of your own health!

I have a friend who's waiting for a scan for a mysterious lump in her stomach - she's been told it will be approx 2 weeks. I told her she should fly to Turkey and pay for private care...you don't mess around with your health.

I am waiting for a prostrate investigation at Manchester Royal Infirmary since last November. They can't even give me an appointment date yet.

Re: Another nail in the coffin

It is embarrassing to listen to Brits saying how fantastic the NHS is. I can only assume they have not tried anything else; if it was a choice between NHS and Turkey, it would be Turkey every time for me.

On the original point, I have never assumed I could go back for treatment. But on the costing, how can there be a 50% loading for expats, as opposed to any other visitor, it does not make sense.

A friend of mine lives in Tenerife. He has got bowel cancer. I asked him if he was returning to the UK for the treatment. He told me that the treatment he was getting in Tenerife was much quicker and far superior than what he would receive in the UK. What's more it was all free.

Michael,

Seriously think about going to Turkey to get it investigated. It's not that expensive. You can always bring your results home for a second opinion.

My father (he had an emergency quadruple heart bypass in Turkey - saved his life) had an xray in Turkey for a hip problem. They told him in the future he'd need a hip replacement as there is serious wear. However, since returning to the UK 3 years ago he's had physiotherapy but no tests or xrays as the NHS doctor has diagnosed him with a 'trapped nerve'.
He can't find his xray from Turkey to get a second opinion.

The financial cost to the NHS from prescribing physio is probably more than the cost of an xray. But then again if the xray showed he needs a new hip (and he's retired) who would have to pay for that? I guess they're trying to bide their time.
