Eid al-Adha surprise

Customers who wandered into Istanbul's Piyalepaşa district market Thursday were met with a pleasant surprise— the items sold at the bazaar were offered free of charge after a local businessman bought-up all the stalls for the day.

Sezgin Baran, Chairman of SBK Holding, purchased all of the items in the market, which sells fresh food products including fruits, vegetables, chesses, and olives, to mark the start of Qurban Bayram, (Feast of the Sacrifice), also known as Eid al-Adha.

Thanks to Baran, market shoppers didn't have to open their wallets in order to go home with bags full of fresh produce, but they had to act fast, as the bazaar was completely sold out within two hours.

Locals couldn't contain their surprise when they discovered that the products were free in honor of the holiday, with customers extending gratitude to the company and Baran for sponsoring the shopping-spree.

As soon as all of the bazaar's products were exhausted, SBK Holding authorities quickly bought up the items from mobile carts around the market, offering free tea, simit, and corn to shoppers.

SBK holding officials humbly declined to comment on the event, as they did not think it would be appropriate to discuss the matter.

Much like Christmastime in the West, Qurban Bayram holds a strong sprit of charity, with posters and billboards erected across Istanbul urging people to donate to poor and vulnerable communities in Turkey and abroad.

Fabulous gesture and a real pleasure to read something positive and pleasant in Turkey these days.

Re: Eid al-Adha surprise

"Sorry to disappoint, but the Patron of this supposedly giving gesture, done it seems in the name of piety, was more likely done as an attention grabbing piece of self-publicity, than an act of benevolence.

As he is known as close to the ruling party, a known "AKBABA"( investment vulture) who sweeps in on a nod, to buy failing companies or seized govt companies. leeching off the assets, keeping the profitable parts/land assets to sell, whilst the employees lose.

Example..... Ask 400 of his ex-employees of Borajet. Bought by him at a knock-down price from the scandal ridden ousted ex AKP Faruk Bayındır the once co-owner of Borajet on Dec 2016 on the nod from Erdogan whilst in the US . Less than three months later April 20..... 400 employees' let go. And servis dept carved out and sold along with the name and properties.

Sorry no Eid altruism here............... I would say "salve" to a guilty conscience if these types have one.

Re: Eid al-Adha surprise

Whilst I'm disappointed, at least some people got some free stuff. I just hope it was the people who needed it most of all.

Re: Eid al-Adha surprise

Please don't be too disappointed Suzy, the spirit of Eid and the giving to the poor is still there.

But not by theses rich dubious self-promoting individuals, but by the majority of the normal ordinary citizens, even despite having thier own ongoing problems, both economic and political, that is besetting Turkey.

They are the real ones keeping alive the " spirit " of Eid with their giving and thoughts, with their generous giving, and to the real needy.

The Turkish Red Cresent alone has said meat given from the peoples sacrificed animals, is to end up as canned meat and given to some 650,000 impoverished households in Turkey and nearly two million people in 32 countries will benefit from these canned meat donations.

And even three days before the start of Eid , the Red Crescent announced that 100,000 Eid donations had been given, cash donations between TL 500 and TL 735 which will continue throughout the festival.

And also, many more other Turkish non-profit organizations are also holding aid campaigns

Small examples being (İHH) said it will reach out to about 2 million people in need in 106 countries. The İyilikder Charity will pursue a different type of aid campaign by donating goats to poor farmers to raise for its milk.

The giving will go to the needy From war torn Syria to Yemen, also Gaza to the Bosnia Herzegovina and Africa to Bangladesh.

All which will be repeated in its giving, by 1000's of Muslim communities around the world to the needy, which most likely won't be reported for its positive image, as what sells papers and political agendas is the negative image of Islam.

I am especially glad to see Bangladesh, India and Nepal flood victims included on the receiving end, as over 1,200 Asians have died in this flood disaster but overwhelmed in publicity stakes of need by America's (although bad with its 47 deaths) flood disaster.

Re: Eid al-Adha surprise

Thanks bal, it's good to hear of any practical projects that help people to help themselves. There have been several projects to help set up people for independent living.

Far better than claiming that a 'sacrifice' is a benefit when just giving food once or twice a year. All that seems to do is keep the poor in a state of beggarly gratitude to please the donors, not nice.
