Re: Turkey & the EU

"The fact Turkey was a self sufficient / wealthy country was a bonus."

I think this statement by chasey is a bit of a give away!

PS. Here's another howler from the same post
"Since the coup and the political purge of 10% of the population not to mention the seizing by the government of over 1000 business netting them something like 70 billion in revenue, I see absolutely no possibility for Turkey to join the EU in the foreseeable future due to such a massive human rights violation."
8,100,000 is a lot of people, where do you get your information I wonder?

Agreed but assuming you mean inside Turkey itself but surely that isn't the case across the EU member states............
I would like to see how that would be sold to EU citizens by the powers that be, "we want Turkey to be a member state because its a soft Muslim country". I don't know about access, more like, "I hear you knocking".

Re: Turkey & the EU

chaseyIt baffles me that there are so many Brexit supporters on this forum. You'd have thought we would all want Turkey in the EU so we could benefit from free movement, freedom to work if we choose, tax free imports and free health cover????

It's much more important than just an easier life for second home owners.

When it was a big topic at the beginning of the 00s, quite a few Turkish friends were very keen, until we told them that the French and Spanish fishing fleets would be able to catch fish all round Turkish waters. They were horrified, they'd truly thought it was going to be a one way gravy train with money from Europe.

Re: Turkey & the EU

Could be the EU wants it external borders as far away from Brussels as possible ie the other side of Turkey :-)

Personally I don't think the EU would be capable of handling any Turkish leader or its population. Too proud a nation, certainly screwed when it comes to wonky fruit & veg :-)
My own experience was that the Kurds were more eager to join than the Turks but that could've just been down to my own circle of friends.

I'm not aware I tried to interpret your post, I gave my opinion. Its not for Turkey to take membership, its for member states to give it.
