Will You Be Flooded?

Here is a new app to show the effect of rising sea levels. Centre it on an area you are interested in, then adjust the scale on the top left.

I am fine up to +40m, then I can park a boat outside my front door.

Lol. At the present rate of seal level rise of 0.003 metres per year, to get to the point where you won't have to pay mooring fees, you will have to wait 13,333 years. By then, that will be the least of your worries!

Re: Will You Be Flooded?

I couldn't get it to rise above 60 metres but we still stay dry even then. However, so does the rest of Kaya, but their problem isn't the sea rising, it is the water coming down from the surrounding mountains!!

Re: Will You Be Flooded?

That's a very good point Harem.
I've known endless people that have been totally flooded out for various reasons and not one of them has lived on the coast.
In Kuşadası some years back after heavy rainfall the drainage system along the main street Inönü Blv gave up the ghost. The pipes underground burst, many businesses along the main street were flooded to such a degree that they went out of business altogether.Ground floor and basement apartments were flooded, ours being just one of them. Parked cars that were taken with flow only came to a halt against a roundabout when some even landed on top of each other, the mud and sand that came down the hillsides from various ongoing delelopments added to the chaos and 2 people lost their lives!

Down here in Side, every winter we get some flooded ground floor apartments and this winter, my daughter's place has been made inhabitable from total flooding due to the endless storms that we've endured. She's about 8kms from the coastline.

The river rises and overflows its banks in Manavgat at some time most every winter and people have a major cleanup to face. Many other countries that I know well, like Nepal, deal with tremendous flooding during each monsson season and they don't even have a coastline!

It's a fact that sea levels are rising but tell me where it's most likely to cause mass flooding and devastation to so many people?

Re: Will You Be Flooded?

If it rises one inch Köyceğiz starts to flood.

Lol. 3mm is one eighth of an inch. So you have at least 8 years left!

Re: Will You Be Flooded?

We need more rain here, we were looking at the lake at the bottom of our garden yesterday, it is almost 2m below 'normal' so about 33m would cause us to worry.

It's going to have to rise about 500 metres to get anywhere near my house, by then my local shops would be in Ankara!
