Married to a Turk for 40+ years

Someone who was married to a Turk has recently lost her husband and while trying to help her we've discovered that she doesn't have a residence permit although she's been in the country for 3 years.
Looking back 40 years ago, is there any chance that when she married she automatically got Turkish citizenship? She doesn't know.
Any useful info or suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Married to a Turk for 40+ years

Hi,as above, unless she personally applied for Turkish Citizenship, she needs a residence Permit before here 90 day visa expired.
Normally shortish overstays for foreigners up to 6ish months will just incur a fine payable on exit, but for a 3 year overstay she will be fined and should be prepared to be banned for a period of time. The length of the ban will be up to the Immigration manager at passport control at her exit point.

Re: Married to a Turk for 40+ years

I take it she arrived on a visa 3 years ago and then chose to stay here without doing anything. Brave I must say but perhaps foolish.

If she had citizenship I feel sure she would know about it.

Re: Married to a Turk for 40+ years

When I married my Turkish husband 17 yrs ago, the ceremony was stopped part way through and I was asked by the Registrar as to whether I wanted Turkish Citizenship or not.
I said that I did because I knew I would be spending the rest of my life living full-time in Turkey and, just 3 days after we were married, Celalettin went and took my Turkish Kimlik from the Nfus Office.

I know the system has changed since then but it was most likely the same 40 yrs ago.
Your friend would know if she had accepted Turkish Citizenship at that time.

When I married my Turkish wife in Istanbul 28 years ago there was no such question. I received my citizenship in 2008 after emigrating here.

Re: Married to a Turk for 40+ years

I had been resident in Turkey a good while having emigrated from Britain some years before my marriage.
Maybe that's what gave me the option of taking Citizenship then at the same time as my marriage.

It was offered, I accepted, and I've had dual nationality ever since.

You're lucky, I was offered nothing other than marriage. I had to apply and pay for citizenship.

Me too Bashful. I applied and paid and was refused

But surely this lady would know if she is a citizen. She'd have a kimlik and have to produce it for everything and renew it. She'd also receive voting slips. Wouldnt the Nufus office be able to say using the husbands details? Sounds quite strange to me.

Re: Married to a Turk for 40+ years

The thing is Alison, if you were here potentially illegally would you want to step into the Nufus office and enquire? Probably the reason why Lynn has posted.
