Tax implications

Of becoming a Turkish citizen. Can anyone advise on this? We are considering taking citizenship. We have had continuous residency since 2003, have no income here 9except fot a few 100 TL interest), but do have UK income from property rentals, (below UK tax threshold). Will we have to complete tax returns each year? , If so will we declare income from out of Turkey?

Re: Tax implications

Are you leaving the UK permanently; that is; are you changing your country of domicile?
Will you revoke UK citizenship or become a dual UK/TC national?
Will you spend less than 3 months in the UK?
Do you plan to keep the rental properties longterm or might you sell them?
Will you be able to draw a UK state pension and if so will that additional income lift you into the UK tax bracket?
Do you have other potential pension income?

Until you can sort out these questions you wont get much further.
I recommend a bit more homework then a discussion with a professional international accountancy firm like PWC who has offices in Turkey.

Re: Tax implications

Thanks Kanga, we do intend to live full time in Turkey but to keep dual nationality. We intend to keep the properties unless JC gets into power and allows tenants to buy at 30% discount. Then we would just sell up and live on the capital. We do not have any UK pension entitlements.

Re: Tax implications

You could try for a meeting with HMRC. There is a specialist expats office in Liverpool (I think) and they could give you more guidance.
Good luck, but bear in mind that if you get into any trouble while in TC, as a dual nat the UK will not be keen to help.

Thanks again kanga, but my 36 years living abroad has told me that the UK diplomatic service is really no help to the individual abroad. I have lived in countries where a coup was going on, and in the Middle East during the Gulf war. they proved themselves to be a self-serving bunch. I do hope to keep out of trouble.
I will look into the HRMC expats office.

All too true IA.

I was in Liberia when things went pear shaped - ran to the British Embassy to find they had locked the gates and flown the coop!
