Post Spaniard Barcela to Open 5 New Hotels in Turkey....

While the tourism sector continues to break visitors and income records in Turkey, local and foreign tourism operators have hastened their investments in Turkey.

Accepted as one of the 30 leading hotel chains in the world, the Spanish Barcelo Group plans to increase its number of hotels in Turkey to six by adding five new hotels.

The teams employed by the company investigated suitable hotels to purchase in the Kemer and Belek townships of Antalya and the Marmaris township of Mugla as well. “Economic stability and the European Union (EU) membership process were effective in finalizing our decision to open new hotels in Turkey. The geographical position of Turkey and this region also attracted us.”

Barcelo Group, which operates 140 hotels in 15 countries worldwide, first entered the Turkish market in April 2004 gaining the management contract of Istanbul’s Eresin Hotel. The group upgraded the standards at the hotel and decided to increase the number of its hotels after being satisfied with this hotel. According to the data given by Barcelo Topkapi Eresin Hotel General Manager Enrigue Acrich Ecker, the group with a 28,000-room capacity will open 20 new hotels in Latin America and Europe during 2006 and 2007. The group’s 2004 turnover was $1,123 billion and it employs about 16,000 people. Forty percent of the group’s hotels are city hotels suitable for conducting business meetings and congresses; the remaining 60 percent consists of holiday villages. The target of their five-year plan is to reach a 57,000-room capacity all around the world.

Ecker said that their teams are negotiating with various hotel owners and are trying to come to some agreements. He summarized the factors leading them to increase investment in Turkey as:

Short flight distance to Europe,

Rich cultural heritage and natural beauty,

Hospitality and warmth of the Turkish people,

Young and trained labor potential,

Economic and political stability; the cultural, economic and political exchange, which are expected to increase with the EU membership process.

Ecker described the profitability of Topkapi Eresin Hotel as “satisfactory”, adding Turkey has a very important tourism potential. “Turkey can increase this potential in a few ways.” Bt undertaking various advertising campaigns abroad, different tourism sectors can be supported. For this reason, Turkey should encourage airline companies, which specialize in short distance cheap flights to come to Turkey, he suggested further.
