Poverty Line

From Zaman:

Hunger and poverty lines rise in October
The monthly income necessary to adequately feed a family of four, referred to as the hunger line, has increased to TL 757 this month from TL 750 last month, according to the Confederation of Turkish Labor Unions (Türk-İş).
The monthly Hunger and Poverty Line Survey, released on Monday by Türk-İş, also determined that the poverty line -- the amount that a family of four must earn monthly in order to pay its rent and meet its basic needs, such as food, transportation, clothing and education -- rose to TL 2,465 in October from TL 2,450 in September.

Türk-İş stated that the cost of living and poverty levels continued to rise in October despite a decline in the inflation rate in line with a drop in demand as many wage workers and pensioners, adversely influenced by the global financial crisis, tried to consume less. Türk-İş also underlined that the number of people earning more than this poverty line throughout Turkey remains limited.

Re: Poverty Line

I think something we 'wealthy' europeans forget is that while we sit and fret about getting less interest on our investment, many others (including Turkish) don't have any investments anyway and it is inflation that is the main cause of concern for them. Inflation has been high in Turkey in recent years, many folk will have used up what little savings they had and are now seriously feeling the pinch.
Added to that there is the high cost of borrowing in Turkey and you can bet there are many small builders who have had to borrow to build a couple of villas, can't sell them and are now seriously in trouble with the banks.

Re: Poverty Line

Unfortunately, the financial system that the whole world relies upon, will always mean that there will be people living below the so called poverty line. Even here in the UK, more people are falling into poverty!!!
The income gap between rich and poor gets wider every year and NO Government will ever do anything about it.

I believe that this unfair system that allows the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer is the main reason why there is so much unrest throughout the world.
I feel sorry for the future generations because unfortunately it will only get worse!

It's a simple fact that, unless the rate of inflation is zero, prices will rise every month.

Cheer up mate, things have got better you know! 100 years ago you would have ended up in the workhouse if you had no work - now you get the advantages of the wonderous Benefit System!
100 years ago you would have been in a Debtors Jail if you didn't pay your Barclaycard - now they just offer you another card to pay off the first.
100 years ago you could have been living on beans and bread - now we have MacDonalds to keep you fit an healthy.
100 years ago you and yours would simply be put on the street for non-payment of rent, kids and all, now we have rent allowances.
100 years ago you could easily have died through lack of simple medicine which today we take for granted.
I could go on, but its a fabulous day here and I want to get in the garden - complete with my light-weight plastic barrow which I also wouldn't have had 100 years ago.

They have extended family living with them and in most cases there is more than one income coming into the household.

Also, based on the monthly figures quoted, there are thousands of expats living comfortably in Turkey below the poverty line. Many expats apparently live here quite happily on around £800 / 1900 TL per month.

Re: Poverty Line

I reckon I could get by comfortably on £800 a month-especially as no rent to pay. It is getting dearer very fast though

Re: Poverty Line

PlDouglas .
What you say is true for 100 years ago ! But not for 2009 . And the benifits you mention are available in UK but not many in Turkey . Also the seasonal workers to live for a year on what they earn in 6 months !! My Husband has his elderly mum and a child to support . school uniforms to buy rents etc and he tries to help his disabled brother too . Its very hard for him and i.ve seen him cry when he can't get work in winter . In uk people are much more lucky we have safety nets for people even oap's get fuel allowance . Thats not the case in Turkey ..... Diane

Re: Poverty Line

It is very true, that no family living in Great Britain will starve, with the Benefit System, our Grandparents before us were all so proud, there was always food on the table, a clean bed, and clothes on their backs, but damned hard it must have been pre National Assistance days. It is very sad that today there are many other countires starving to death, and not all of it is their own doing, it's just a fact of life for them, and very very sad.
