Post Tesco Kipa slammed for denial of benefits to Turkish workers....

If you work for Real and Carrefour in Turkey, you can join their trade union and enjoy decent wages and employment conditions.

If you work for Tesco, bad luck, unions are not welcome.

Last year, Tesco made far over 2 billion USD in pure profits, partly thanks to its exploited young Turkish workers.

Real, the hypermarket chain of German commerce multinational Metro, has recognised UNI Commerce affiliate Tez-Koop-Is and agreed on collective agreement negotiations.

This comes after the union had been successful in recruiting more than half of the company's workforce. Yesterday, the union and the company met, and issued a joint statement that opened up their social dialogue.

Already earlier, with the support of UNI Commerce, Tez-Koop-Is has reached a similar agreement with French retail multinational Carrefour. The global union was also positively involved in the Real recognition, together with central management.

These developments put the leading British retailer Tesco in a less than flattering light. Through its Turkish subsidiary Tesco Kipa, the highly profitable London-based multinational is running a veritable social dumping operation in Turkey.

It pays ludicrously sub-standard wages, a denial of the benefits that main competitors pay their workers, and a systematic union busting in Wal-Mart style.

In contrast to its French and German competitors, and main Turkish retailers, Tesco has refused to accept the recognition decisions of the ministry of labour.

Instead, the company has initiated a long-drawn appeals process, and used the extra time for repression and harassment, to discourage its mainly young workforce from joining or remaining as members of their union.

Hope this isn't a subsidiary of our UK Tesco. If it is, they're going to get a strong letter

Yes Jackie, it certainly is a part of Tesco plc.

Here is some information for you and anyone else that would like to air their views to the Chief Executive Sir Terry Leahy.

Tesco report & accounts can be found Here

However, the link to open a new window and display the accounts and trading statement in HTML format doesnt work! Bravo Tesco!

The link for a .PDF report here does work.
