Thumbs up A Step Forward For Animal Rights In Turkey

Parliament is preparing to take the initiative for animal rights. Under a new legislative proposal, killing animals would be banned and a budget created to help homeless and weak animals. Using animals for gambling and entertainment purposes would be prohibited and animal lovers who volunteer their services would be supported by the local government

Boundaries of animal rights to be extended - Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review

Lets hope that it doesn't take too long for these "legislative proposals" to become reality in Turkey!

Re: A Step Forward For Animal Rights In Turkey

Thank You KKOB for this thread, and yes, let's hope that it starts on the streets first, I abhore the use of animals for this cruel sport, if that is what it can be called. Our animals are not there for this "entertainment".......................

Re: A Step Forward For Animal Rights In Turkey

I'm glad to see that too. I had a recent thread about this cruelty, and a good few here, including yourself KKOB, were almost telling me it did not go on during this feast.

I note the word torture used in the article which goes even further than the term cruelty.

My point was never to have a go at the religious rite itself, just the fact that Islamic rules and guidelines regarding the treatment of the animals to be sacrificed, were being openly ignored in many cases.

I think you may have misinterpreted my reply.

But anyway, this legislation will be welcomed by many supporters of Animal Rights, myself included. Whether it actually makes a difference, and how long it takes to come into force, remains to be seen.

Re: A Step Forward For Animal Rights In Turkey

Well, I have read the article and am confused. It is as if they are just writing about the ANIMAL PROTECTION BILL LAW (LEGİSLATİON NUMBER 5199) which was accepted on June 24, 2004......

Re: A Step Forward For Animal Rights In Turkey

Funny that Val, when I first read it I thought I was having Deja Vu.

I think the important part of the "new" legislation is that With the consent of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, first local governments, and then other related institutions would receive financial support to establish nurseries and veterinary clinics for weak and homeless animals and to conduct maintenance, rehabilitation, vaccination and neutering services.

I don't think that Legislation Number 5199 was being financially supported by Central Government.
