25 dead in bus crash

yesterday there was a dreadful crash between a bus and a lorry 25 killed and more than 16 others with dreadful injuries.
it happened on a single lane road near Diyabakır. A terrible tragedy for all involved

Turkey must be one of the worlds worst countries for road accidents.

The risks people take when overtaking on hazardous mountain roads are unbelievable...some of the stunts ive seen on the Alanya Hatay route testify to the Turks inability to anticipate failure ..or what might be round the next bend....until its too late

Re: 25 dead in bus crash

On one of our first visits to Turkey over 20 years ago we were travelling on the mountain road from Dalaman Airport to Olu Deniz in a private pick up car from the airport. There was a really heavy rainstorm as we were travelling and the driver was totally oblivious of how dangerous it was. Despite my husband constantly telling him to slow down and me gripping the seat and actually praying, he carried on at breakneck speed overtaking and driving like a maniac. We ended up skidding off the road thankfully into a fruit orchard and not off the edge of the mountain as I envisaged we would. Never felt so scared in my life before or since. As you say Shirley, driving standards in Turkey are bad and the accidents seem never to stop.

Driving in Turkey means: Drive your own car along with the one in front of you & the one behind. Stevie Wonder would drive well here !!!

Re: 25 dead in bus crash

Our 18 year old son passed his driving test in August. After passing the theory test, the learner drivers had approx 10 hours (1hr per day) behind the wheel of a car before going in for their test.

The problem here in Kusadasi is that they aren't taken out in to normal every day traffic, so don't learn things like where to position yourself on a busy roundabout, giving way, traffic lights etc. They "practice" on the road going passed the football stadium..not what you'd call a main road, and it doesn't have traffic lights on it. Also they cram 4 in the car at a time; with 3 other learners sitting in the back seat while you're doing a lesson.

The actual test is done on the same road they've been learning on....so when they pass they don't have any real road sense. I've known some people who have passed their test but couldn't take a car in to town on their own; my sister-in-law for one

Luckily enough, our son got his motobike licence last year...and a motorbike so has been on the roads; even driving down to Bodrum; but in the 9 years I've been driving here, I wonder if some of drivers get their licences out of a lucky bag!

Re: 25 dead in bus crash

I came back from Diyarbakir at the weekend and am not in the least suprised that this crash happened...in fact im suprised that 20 crashes like this dont happen every day. I have never seen such bad driving as i did there. We were in a crash last Tuesday, we were the middle of 3 cars waiting to turn left when a 4x4 that was in the middle lane cut across smashing straight into the car in front, pushed it back into us with such force we hit the car behind! Amazingly the driver of the 4x4 stopped only to argue it wasnt his fault. The next day we were driving in town, we had the right of way but a car jumped (totally ignored) the give way and we had to emergency stop. The fool driving had a fag in one hand and a mobile in the other...he's very lucky i didnt rip his head off his neck as we had the boys in the car and Kawa really hurt his shoulder and neck when the seat belt pulled. He looked quite taken aback that i had an issue with his driving.
The biggest problem i see is that the local council are not allowed to have any say on parking fines and are unable to control traffic problems...or even enforce traffic laws. The police do this and they wont work with Diyarbakir council (BDP). Stupid really!

Re: 25 dead in bus crash

How absolutely tragic for all of those families that have lost people in this accident and also for the ones that have been left behind with serious injuries.

I must admit that I find the standard of Turkish driving here appalling, every time I get into my car I feel that I am on a white knuckle ride, not from our driving but because of the “fearless” Turkish drivers, and I am a nervous wreck in the summer months.

They have no fear whatsoever on the roads and unfortunately have not had the experience of numerous structured lessons, especially regarding safety on the roads.

A Turkish friend of ours had been studying for his driving licence here in Turkey and when asked what a solid white line in the middle of the road means, his answer, “so you can see the road better at night” with answers like that I fear we have no hope !

When we drive here we don’t just drive for ourselves, but also the ones in front, behind and across the road.

I would like to wish safe driving for everybody here over the holidays.

Best Regards
Lily

Re: 25 dead in bus crash

Listening to the news over Bayram holidays and hearing how many have died on the roads in that time indicates how bad their driving is. I think last Bayram alone there was over 300 deaths.

Re: 25 dead in bus crash

As a regular driver here, hardly a day goes by without me seeing an accident of some sort. The evening news on the Turkish TV always shows close circuit video of horrendous accidents caused almost always by reckless and thoughtless driving. I was told there were 10000+ fatalities in 2010, which compares to just over 1800 on the UK's much more crowded roads.
