Interesting article regarding 'illegal' gambling in Turkey

Foreign gambling websites cash in on Turkey?s illegal market

A gentle hint in Todays Gule* regarding illegal gambling -

Upcoming investigations intend to decipher the methods being used to provide outlets for gambling in Turkey. The technique used in the Internet cafes in question is that when people come to play online they are offered accounts on illegal foreign gambling websites. When a new member joins they will often win a small amount of money at the start to get them hooked. Then, when users have been playing for a certain amount of time, they start to suffer big losses. Many are not aware that the webmasters of such poker and gambling websites are in full control of the games and can easily dictate the fortunes of users.

Can it actually be illegal to gamble online in Turkey? Is changing/hiding your IP an illegal activity in Turkey?

Legal or otherwise, would you chance your luck on the roll of a dice if that dice was in another room.

lol I'm an ex-croupier; I'm not sure my response will be accepted as an objective answer.

It's not the dice that's the problem - it's who's in control of it that is the issue (if anyone is!).

I am not a gambler myself, and I loathe to see financial waste but there's a difference between my personal preferences and peoples actual rights.

I know a couple of serious online poker players. They know each other by their online tags and collude together by sharing card details with each other , which gives them an edge against opponents.

Shirley,

This system is a joke.
You can bet on the horses - which is fine. You can gamble on the lotto - again fine.

Yet you can't play on line blackjack? Doesn't make sense.

Re: Interesting article regarding 'illegal' gambling in Turkey

when i first moved to alanya there were three great all night casinos with free drinks and food even free fags..then overnight they closed them down..and they all relocated to Girne where there's a casino on every corner

i see all the Iddaa shops in alanya do good business...but the profits are governments
a bet is ok but gambling is forbidden...laughable.
heres a bit about the current scene in Turkey from a gambling site..im surprised it hasn't been censored yet

Sports Betting in Turkey
The history of gambling in Turkey is fraught with changing rules about what is allowed and what is not, but the one form of gambling that remains constant is sports betting. This is because the only legal sportsbook in Turkey is run by the state. It's called IDDAA, which means "bet", and it has been operating in its current form since 2004. IDDAA is a weekly fixed betting game, and is mostly about football, offering wagers on hundreds of football matches from leagues around the world. IDDAA tickets can be purchased form more than 4,000 venues across Turkey. This Turkish sportsbook is very successful, taking in more than $1.5 billion each year. It maintains a government-sanctioned monopoly on all sports betting in the country, and no other companies, local or foreign, are allowed to operate sportsbooks in Turkey.

Online Sports Betting in Turkey
In 2007, Turkey passed a law outlawing online gambling. The law has but one exception, and that is for IDDAA, which is allowed to offer its sports internet betting service to Turkish players. The government of Turkey does not intend to give out any more online gambling licenses. They also try to prevent players from using foreign internet sportsbooks by asking Turkish banks to block money transfers to gambling websites, but it is not an effective strategy, and has not really deterred players from betting online. Foreign online sportsbooks also offer a wider range of wagers, better event coverage, and often better odds than IDDAA, so they are an attractive alternative to the official state sportsbook of Turkey when it comes to placing sports bets online.
