Let's hope there will be a thorough investigation and not a cover up,I can see the internet being interfered with as the questions start to come

Re: mining disaster 200 dead

This latest incident in Turkey highlights the Turkish ethos, namely religeon and money with money being the main aim. Riding roughshod over people to get their hands on that money seems to be the easiest route. Given this phylosophy the last thing the country needs is a government who promote this ethos. Corruption is corruption whether its to cheat people out of money or their lives.

People have been labouring underground for hundreds of years but time has tought them what dangers to avoid and measures to take to avoid them. The images I have seen yesterday are reminiscent of 19th century mining. Add to that long working hours and child labour and you begin to see why right minded people are against the ruling party.

The owner of this privatised mine slashed costs to 20% of the pre privatisation costs. He is a hero in the eyes of this government and of course topped up the coffers even more. When it comes to election time these poor people are plied with coal and rice and they know no better than to take it.

Wake up Turkey, You are being taken on a rollercoaster ride into the past.

Re: mining disaster 200 dead

So sad and as already been stated could of been avoided if safety measures were taken as problems had already been brought to attention.M asking money is all well and good but shouldn't be at the expense of people's lives . My heart goes out to all those men and families you don't expect your loved ones to not return home from work no matter how difficult the job. R.I.P

So tragic, my thoughts are with these families whose loved ones went out to work, and they will never see them again.

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

Terrible tragedy RIP & condolences to the families it is so sad.

HDP asked the government to talk to miners who had already raised concerns about this mine, the Government refused, it is possible this disaster could have been avoided.

Just noticed there are 2 threads about the miners maybe they could be linked?

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

CHP Manisa Deputy Özgür Özel said he submitted a motion to the Parliament with the support of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputies on Oct. 23, 2013.

“We demand an investigation into all the mine accidents in Soma to reveal the reasons and those responsible for the deaths in those accidents, to find permanent solutions to preventing a repeat of these cases, and to measure the sufficiency of the law enforcement and auditing of these institutions,” said the motion submitted by the CHP.

However, AKP deputies voted against the motion, ensuring its removal from Parliament’s agenda.

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

The issue was raised in October by the CHP deputy after numerous accidents, some of which led to miner deaths and serious injuries. The vote took place on the 29th April this year, and the AKP voted against investigating the privatised mine; it doesn't take much digging to figure out why (no pun intended).

When Belkin Elvan was injured during the Gezi protests, which ultimately led to his death, the PM asked (during one of his supporter rallies) what a 15 year old boy was doing on the streets during the 'riots' in the first place (let's try to ignore the tears for Esma who died during protests in Egypt).
I wonder if anyone will ask him what a 15 year old boy was doing down a mine in Manisa.

The saddest thing I think is that Soma is predominantly AKP territory. He dismissed his own voters fears.

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

It seems that Turkey and China are worst - the mining disasters happening all the time - the last one now, just a day after the one in Soma:

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

The number of people that have died in this dreadful mining accident has sadly gone up to 350 now. It is so terribly sad for the families of all these people. May all those who have sadly had their lives snatched away RIP.
