Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

"BASINIZ SAG OLSON" to the families of all the miners who have passed, and all the hope in the world for those trapped.
Coming originally from a Fife mining family I can relate to the anguish felt by all concerned

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

I just watched RTE's speech. I'm outraged by it, by the lack of empathy.
He was asked by a female journalist about Turkey's mining death record, and how the number of workplace deaths are rising. He answered first by saying 'yes, journalists probably don't know much about mining', and then continued to reel off the number of deaths from mining disasters in the UK, France, Japan, China and the US (and other countries, I can't recall) . How sickening, that he's trying to justify these deaths by claiming they're within some kind of limit! He really makes me sick.

I honestly sat there open-mouthed. But I know his voters will believe everything he said, regardless when those deaths in the UK or France happened, and that the number of deaths in Turkish mining accidents are present day.

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

I have just heard a report by a Turkish, on-the-spot, correspondent for BBC Radio. She said several of the examples of mining disasters Erdogan used were 19th Century. She further said the bereaved were unhappy with his statement and some were arrested by Polis for trouble-making.

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

i listened to him too with disbelief his whole spiel was about trying to avoid the consequences of what he knows is going to open a huge can of worms...

there was absolutely no genuine concern for the tragic events he should have had the grace either to stay away or keep his big mouth shut at this time...awful man

he was actually reeling off numbers of men killed in mining disasters worldwide some that happened about 100 years ago..
how much longer before Turkey wakes up.

this mine has been the subject of safety discussions as recently as last month
the miners earn about 500 dollars a month... the families that have lost their bread winner are already poor...

ive just watched the video that Charlotte posted ...14 days ago a proposal about safety standards at this mine was refused by the ruling party...i wonder how many are share holders

heartbreaking

Re: Turkish mining disaster 200 dead

no water canon or gas canister wielding cops to protect him there
Will he shed tears and ask what a 15 year old was doing getting killed in a cola mine..
he asked what 15 year old Berkan was doing on the street when he was hit by a gas canister
Turkey heads the list of countries with the most mining deaths

If it wasn't so sad a circumstance the booing and hissing would be "music to my ears"

When will the disaster be blamed on ' the parallel state' ?

It has been suggested via twitter accounts (probably RTE's virtual army at work). I'm sure there will be a few AKP supporters who believe that.

RTE had to enter a market after exiting Soma municipality where he gave his speech. His car number plate was removed so it couldn't be identified.

His actions are being negatively compared to the president of South Korea, who took responsibility for the ferry disaster and apologised on behalf of the state, plus claimed those directly responsible would be held to account. She also visited the site twice and spoke with the victims families. RTE is conspicuous in his absence; he said today that SOMA was the safest mine in Turkey.

There are protests in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara tonight - police are predictably using water canon and tear gas again.
