Re: End of all inclusives in Greece.

Done it in Cuba twice, not a lot of choice in those days and once in Barbados which is definitely a working class tory chav ghetto, couldn't stand the place.

Re: End of all inclusives in Greece.

Did it once in Mallorca as the 2 weeks full-board (didn't include alcohol) cost less than the flight on its own would have cost. So we just used the hotel to sleep in and ate out every day. As newly-weds we could not have afforded to pay for the flight, transport, accommodation and food. Not something we wanted to do after that, though. As much to do with the people who had to pile up their plates and fight over food "because we've paid for it".

If you stay in the hotel compound all the time, I can't see it as a relaxing holiday, as it seemed to me that everyone was fighting to get the places round the pool, rushing to be in first at breakfast, gobbling to eat as much as possible, competing for the first prize in the tango competition, running to get back to the hotel for lunch before all the good stuff had gone... Just watching everyone else was exhausting enough!

Re: End of all inclusives in Greece.

Wow, I must have visited some different AIs than those on here ... admittedly they have been 5 star ones where people didn't stay in the "compound" all the time, didnt "gobble" as much as they could or fight for a place round the pool.

At times there seems to be some kind of snobbery around people going to AI resorts ... as I have said all along, it's the choice of people to go AI, B&B or SC as they wish. None of these choices are wrong ... it's just what suits each individual.

Last year I spent a week at the Reef Oasis Blue Bay in Sharm el Sheikh ... umpteen pools to choose from with umpteen sunbeds to choose from and complimentary iced towels when it got a tad warm; several a la carte restaurants to choose from as well as an international buffet which was fantastic; bars aplenty (quiet, lively or sporting among them) ... and yes I did go out of the complex to visit the local area and frequent local businesses.

Re: End of all inclusives in Greece.

Jak,

Actually I looked at the Reef Oasis Blue Bay in Sharm el Sheikh for over last Christmas and thought it looked a really nice place.

As I said earlier I've only recently got into the AI scene (last couple of years) last year in both Egypt (Sharm el Sheikh) and Morocco staff were asking why I didn't always come for dinner and seemed quite taken aback when I said I had eaten out (usually at some little back street dive where the locals eat)

I like AI for the convenience and for the fact of not being ripped off (especially after a few bevies).

Re: End of all inclusives in Greece.

Since we sold our place in Turkey, some of our family (two families, total of three children) holiday in an AI place in Kusadasi. Wouldn't be my choice but it suits them and it isn't cheap. They have done all the touristy sightseeing, prefer to avoid the bother of dragging the kids around different restaurants, and with the choice of a few swimming pools and children's entertainment, enjoy a stress free holiday.

They tell me that the food is good (but no pork), they see far fewer chavs in the hotel complex than in the restaurants in Kus and they feel generally more secure.

Re: End of all inclusives in Greece.

Regarding the article AI's in Greece, not tried them in Greece personally but can see these have been a popular option for many just as 'package holiday deal market including flights started.
One of the best holidays we had in recent times happens to be in Greece but as I like flexibility chose 2 different areas in Crete which meant it was just board and Breakfast only. Breakfast was high quality in both places.

Nowadays AI seems popular with young families. However, instead of holidays that include air travel combined with a base to sleep and eat for a week or two sometimes one can find stunning scenery and coastline as well as quality food remaining within the United Kingdom. It sometimes feels the tour operators are nudging the families as soon as Christmas ends with the new holiday brochures and ideas...whereas I recall when I was growing up people seemed more impulsive and adventurous doing their own thing rather than an organised holiday...that said as mentioned it's nice to have the choice of a planned holiday as opposed to chaos and mystery ..

Re: End of all inclusives in Greece.

Getting rid sounds a bad idea jobswise but an extreme left government certainly won`t like the capitalist ethos of AI hotels. Pehaps they could be state run ?
