Izmir Pastor and wife held, awaiting deportation.

Protestant pastor of ?zmir church faces deportation from Turkey - RELIGION

So the list of people targeted by the government is growing - military personnel, police officers, judiciary employees, educators, journalists and media workers, opposition party members and now people from other faith.

I feel so sorry for this couple. To have a permanent home in a country for 20 years and then be kicked out, it is really heartbreaking. I recall how difficult it was to leave friends and family by CHOICE. I can't imagine what it's like to be forced to go, without even a proper goodbye.

Does anyone know the whole story here? For 30 years trying to convert Muslims to Christianity would get you deported.

I don't know the story either, I am just commenting, not judging.

As far as I know they weren't trying to convert anyone, just catering to protestants needs in Izmir (and doing a lot of local charity work along the way).

I feel the writing is very much on the wall however, people should make backup plans when then involve themselves in risky activities in Turkey.

Emergency order broadens Turkey?s powers to deport foreigners

Deemed a security risk and kicked out of the home they'd known for 20 years. No proof required. We can't even deport convicted terrorists!

Re: Izmir Pastor and wife held, awaiting deportation.

Was never deported, is still in prison - since October!
While Turkey whines about the rise of Islamaphobia in the west (even while the west suffers huge terror attacks) it holds a priest without charge on allegations of being a Gulenist.

Turkey faces real challenges and bears a huge burden. But fear of these threats shouldn’t drive their nation away from core values of justice, religious freedom and due process. In contradiction to all of those values, it appears Turkey wavered on its constitutional commitment with the imprisonment of American Pastor Andrew Brunson, who has been held in prison without clear cause since early October.

Mr. Brunson is a pastor of a small church on the west coast of Turkey. After living peacefully in Izmir for more than 20 years, he was imprisoned based on unsubstantiated allegations of ties to the Gülen movement, a group that many blame for the coup attempt in July. The local prosecutor has yet to produce compelling evidence against Pastor Brunson. I met with the Ministry of Justice in Ankara to discuss Brunson’s case, but the situation remains bleak.

So, why aren't people world-wide protesting about that, instead of all the fuss made about President Trump, who was elected by the American people, and is doing exactly what he said he would do ?

Could you imagine the outcry if it were an Imam detained indefinitely with no charges in the US?
At the moment there's hysteria over people being questioned on reentry to the US, the newspapers can't find enough like-for-like stories to cover of poor mid east nationals who are having 'difficulty' or concerns about their journeys.

I wish all these millions of people who are outraged about Trump would spend a little of their precious time being outraged by real dictators.

When Trump 'accidentally bombs' Mexican smugglers crossing the border, and kills 36 of them. Then perhaps I'll bother to listen...

Re: Izmir Pastor and wife held, awaiting deportation.

Deporting anyone or banning them on spurious grounds is wrong, whoever is doing it.
At least the people being deported from Turkey are not being sent back to war zones. Whilst I am sure it will be distressing to be forced to leave your home, it is better than having to flee for your life and then be returned there because of a ridiculous gesture that will not make the USA safer from terrorism. What Trump is doing now directly equates to what Hitler and the Nazis did when they first came to power and history shows where that led.

Re: Izmir Pastor and wife held, awaiting deportation.

I'm sure he and his family would welcome deportation if only to get out of a Turkish jail.

Why wasn't there an outcry when Obama banned all Iraquis from entering the US for 6 months in 2011?
