Is Migrant Deal Over?

From Breitbart:

Extract:
"The migrant deal between the European Union (EU) and Turkey may be failing as over 350 migrants have arrived in Greece in three days, up considerably from previous weeks.
The controversial EU-Turkey migrant deal had reduced the number of migrants crossing from Turkey to Greece from the thousands per month to hundreds over the last year, with the number of migrants arriving averaging at around 35 per day.

But the last three days have seen 362 migrants arrive, fuelling speculation the agreement has collapsed following recent diplomatic spats between Turkey and several EU countries."

Not a huge shock surely, they threatened to do it:

Let?s send 15,000 migrants a month to Europe to shock them: Turkish interior minister - DIPLOMACY

And not for the first time..

Migrant crisis: Turkey threatens EU with new surge - BBC News

Erdogan does this to show his people how powerful he is...beating the EU. It's referendum time, he really doesn't mind using refugees as pawns in his power-play.

Re: Is Migrant Deal Over?

Dimitris Avramopoulos e.u. migration chief from the Greek right-wing New Democracy Party , from a country most affected by the deal , only yesterday said the deal is working.

He is hardly someone to portray Turkey in a good light if it wasn't. The Breitbart reporting does have an agenda to fulfill , so the increase in numbers might be their excuse, when it

could be put down to something as simple as the onset of Spring and better weather for trying then winter. storms ...

So for all Erdogan's Nationalistic rhetoric .... is bluster for home consumption .

EU-Turkey migrant deal working in full: top official

21 March 2017

The EU's migration chief said Tuesday that a landmark border deal with Turkey remained fully operational despite Ankara's recent threat to "blow the mind" of Europe and renege on it.

Ankara and Brussels a year ago signed a deal that has substantially lessened the flow of migrants from Turkey to Europe via a dangerous passage across the Aegean Sea.

"We don't have any indiction that the EU-Turkey statement would stop delivering," ?EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos told reporters in Warsaw.

"The Turkish side is doing its part and the results are very, very positive... this statement is fully operational," he said

His comments, during a joint press conference with Fabrice Leggeri, the director of EU border agency Frontex, come after Turkey said it could send 15,000 refugees a month to EU territory.

The remarks and accompanying threat to "blow the mind" of Europe by taking such steps deepened Turkey's dispute with the EU and its top members.

The row was triggered when The Netherlands and Germany refused to allow Turkish ministers to campaign in a April 16 referendum on expanding President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's powers. The ban prompted the Turkish leader to compare the two countries with Nazi Germany.

The mass influx of migrants to Europe in the summer of 2015 has been seen as a boost for supporters of the continent's far-right.

Avramopoulos on Tuesday urged all EU members to "share responsibility and show solidarity" in hosting mainly Syrian refugees stranded in Greece and Italy.

Greek news outlets are saying much the same thing Ian. I think with arty stamping his feet it's going to get messy! If the EU & friends aren't pro-active now it will make the situation much worse, last chance to send patrol vessels to stop & return those attempting illegal entry into the EU...........

"New arrivals to the eastern Aegean islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos have raised the number of migrants landing in Greece from neighbouring Turkey since last Thursday to 566, government figures showed on Monday."

EU-Turkey deal cut deaths in Aegean, says Greek premier

Alexis Tsipras says refugee flows have been minimized, deaths reduced thanks to pact

ATHENS

The EU-Turkish deal is the reason why refugee flows have been minimized and deaths in the Aegean are almost non-existent, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Wednesday.

Tsipras was talking after meeting European Council President Donald Tusk.

“The deal is hard but necessary,” Tsipras added, talking to the media after the two men met in Athens to discuss the migration and economic crises.

The EU is confident that Syrian refugees can be returned to Turkey, Tusk told reporters.

“Turkey has a track record in protecting refugees,” he said, describing Greece as being on the frontline of the refugee crisis. European efforts must be fast-tracked, Tusk added.

Re: Is Migrant Deal Over?

Since both the Dutch and Austrian governments have refused to allow Turkish ministers to speak at coup anniversary rallies in coming days, and the Hungarians have closed their borders there is scope for a lot of mischief in the EU agreement in the coming months.

All these leaders pat each other on the back, stand on a podium & say problem solved. It was never solved nor will it ever be until many of these people can go back to their country of origin. They need to get those countries safe & like the Turkish deal, it will never be safe.

Im surprised really that those who live in the EU that Turkey wants extraditing have not been shoved back to Turkey.........so hats off to the EU for standing its ground on that score.
