Insurance a sin or halal?

A top local official in the Central Anatolian province of Konya has said local farmers are not insuring their agricultural fields and products against droughts or natural disaster risks as they believe such acts are “not accepted by religion.”

Rıfat Kavuneker, the head of Karatay Chamber of Agriculture, therefore, has called for the issuance of a “fatwa” by authorities to encourage locals to insure their products and fields.

Farmers in Konya avoid insuring products as they see it as ?sinful? - BUSINESS

Makes you wonder if mosques are insured.

They most likely have learned that Turkish insurers are notorious for not paying out.

Actually I disagree. I had a UK claim about 30 years ago and had to take the insurer to court to get paid out. I have been involved in 3 claims in recent years here in turkey (one on behalf of a friend). All paid out without a quibble, the last time I had to argue hard to say that I did not need a rental car during the repair process. They were insisting that I could have one to sit in my garage for a week.

Reading your comment here, I may be wrong but I feel you've never had to claim here in Turkey?

21 years ago, my car was parked overnight outside Kamer Motel in Old Side town. I came out the following morning to find a back wing and most of the boot and rear bumper and lights to be demolished.
Luckilly, the Turkish man that owned the nearby market which stayed open through the night, told me that he had seen a council rubbish truck do the damage at 4am that morning.
Off I went to the Belidiye, we found the truck with a nice line of Fiat Turqoise paint on the front and there was no argument.
My car was picked up, taken to Tofaş and returned to me good as new one week later.

About 9 months ago, my car, not the same car, was parked here outside my office in Side. A wagon that was delivering meat to the butcher next door, very efficiently took the left wing and lights off my car when he was parking up. No problem. Fortunately he was insured, paperwork was done and submitted and my car was put back in good order.

neither of these Turkish Insurance companies argued about anything and paid up without any hassle.

Re: Insurance a sin or halal?

Drought would be considered a natural phenomenon and it would be difficult to find an insurance company offering a policy that covered it.
They might get cover for disruption of water supplies which led to crop loss, but lack of rain? Questionable.

Re: Insurance a sin or halal?

One thing that ruined our apple crop one year was hail. Only 4 fields in the village were hit, at the end of June. Apples had spots on them and were unsellable. Cider was good though.
