Former British soldier arrested in Didim

A former British soldier who fought against Isis in Syria alongside a Kurdish militia faces terrorism charges after being arrested in Turkey while on holiday with his girlfriend, The Independent has learned.

Joe Robinson was detained at the resort of Didim, on the Aegean coast, with Mira Rojkan, a Bulgarian living in Leeds, along with her mother who had accompanied them. Both the women were subsequently released, but the Turkish authorities have stated that 23 year old Mr Robinson, from Accrington in Lancashire, is being investigated in connection with terrorist offences and is likely to face charges

A mercenary, British or not, no protection under the Geneva convention for those who make war for money or thrills.

Perhaps this guy isn't blessed with the greatest amount of intelligence. I am trying to think of a modern day equivalent of what he did. Perhaps fighting with the Paras on Bloody Sunday, bragging about it and going to Donegal on holiday. Perhaps fighting for Hitler and going to Tel Aviv on holiday.

Surely he must have known that Turkey regard the people he was fighting with as Terrorists. So let's go to Turkey on holiday, have a few Efes and make sure that everyone knows that I am here.

Re: Former British soldier arrested in Didim

Expect folk to pop up saying in all sincerity he was driven by conscience and was a medic who never picked up a gun or some such bollox.

The word mercenary comes from the Latin mercēnārius, "hireling," which defines someone who will do anything in exchange for money. In history, a mercenary was often a fighter who followed the next paycheck, but in recent decades it's also been used for fighters who pursue a good cause in areas where soldiers are in short supply. A synonym for mercenary is "soldier of fortune," and this phrase sometimes glorifies the mercenary, turning the meaning of "fortune" from "cash" to "luck in battle."

Re: Former British soldier arrested in Didim

One mans mercenary is another mans mercenary ,

AirScan Titusville, FL US Department of Defense, United States Air Force, and a number of private companies

Academi McLean, VA Consulting. Formerly known as Blackwater and Xe and it is part of the Constellis Group.

Custer Battles McLean, VA Iraq and oil sector (at present, have ceased operations in Iraq) Dissolved

G4S Risk Management Palm Beach Gardens, FL Paramilitary security forces of DoD, Energy Department, Savannah River Nuclear Site, and others. Commonly known in the U.S. by its former name, Wackenhut Group.

Jorge Scientific Corporation Arlington, VA Consulting
KBR Houston, TX Formerly a Division of Halliburton

MPRI, Inc. Alexandria, VA

MVM, Inc. Vienna, VA CIA and NSA contractor

Northbridge Services Group Lexington, KY Advisory, Training, Operational Support, etc.
Northrop Grumman Falls Church, VA

Raytheon Waltham, MA
Titan Corporation San Diego, CA Sold to L3 Communications in 2005

Triple Canopy, Inc. Herndon, VA South America, Iraq, Syria It is part of the Constellis Group.

Vinnell Corporation Fairfax, VA Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iraq

For instance , many operated alongside Turkey's current list of terrorist organisations.

Would think that it is a bit of an own goal for Turkish holiday prospects , many will only link the Brit , soldier , holiday , Turkey , arrested .

Is it worth it ?

Steve
