Resident permits and visas

Hello everyone,
This is my first message. I visited Bodrum last year, May, on a tourist visa. If you stay for the 3 months, can you just border hope, like to Kos and then come back into Bodrum and allowed to stay another 3 months? I also live in Romania part of the year and have so much trouble getting to stay there longer than 3 months as you can only stay 3 months out of 6. Can someone let me know. Thanks

Hi Jen and welcome to TLF. You can go over to Kos to renew your visa, lots of people who live there don't bother to get a residency visa, they just go over to Kos every three months.

Re: Resident permits and visas

Hi Gail, thanks for your reply. I'm still trying to find my way around this site. Ok, so for the moment you are allowed to just go out to Kos and then back again but then things can change from one moment to the next as I found in Romania. I was border hopping into Hungary or Austria etc for ages then when I went to do it a couple of years ago they had put in different rules and I couldn't get back in !!!! So that is why I was going to look at the residency thing so that you could be assured on that not happening.

Jen I have a friend who lives near to Bodrum and he has been there for over 2 years and he pops to Kos for his visa everytime. I have heard people say that the port doesn't like it but he has never had a problem and as I have said he has been there over 2 years now. I know for a fact that there are lots of other people who do it also, so don't worry

Getting back in won't be the problem' it is getting onto the ferry to leave!
At Bodrum harbour, the harbour police like to give people a hard time if they think they are just going to Kos to renew their visa.
I have heard of a woman being stopped getting the ferry to Kos, as the police believed she was just using the trip to get her visa.
If they let you leave, you are home and dry, and will have no trouble getting the visa on your return.

Hey guys,

We genuinely went on a day trip to Kos, and boy did we get a hard time when we came back ! Without trying to get all "preachy" ( is that a word ?) border hopping is a bit of a dodge. If I was a Turkish Official it would bug the hell out of me, as you are avoiding the residency fee.

Personally, I wouldnt commend this course of action. True I am a bit of a wuss, but then I dont want to get "excluded from turkey" stamped in my passport. I moan about people playing the system here, so I wont try and do what I moan about abroad.

Its up to you, but if you are considering permanent residency I wouldnt try and avoid the fees due for the right to live in Turkey. Each to there own.

We found it less hassle going via Turgetreis. The officers seem more laid-back.

İ once went over with another lady and we both got a ticking off by a young policeman in Bodrum. İ was very embarrassed and humiliated so my husband went in and complained to the person in charge and he said he had absolutely no right to say anything to persons re-newing their visas and if he did it again he would be disciplined accordingly. Dunno if this guy is still there as İ went via Turgetreis last time ( just a booze trip as İ got my residency and citizenship later)
