Re: Citizenship in Turkey
This part isn't true as a foreign woman hasn't been eligible for automatic turkish citizenship upon marriage for at least the past 4 years.
However, these conditions are not applicable to those who are married to a Turkish national. Everyone who has been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years (and has been actually living together with his or her spouse) will be given citizenship as well. Moreover, a foreign woman marrying a Turkish man acquires Turkish nationality automatically in the course of the marriage, if she so wishes. On the other hand, a foreign man marrying a Turkish woman cannot enjoy this opportunity and is subject to the three-year rule mentioned above. Children born in Turkey do not have a claim to Turkish citizenship unless one of the parents is also a Turkish citizen.

Re: Citizenship in Turkey
I've got my kimlik!!!!!! Hooray! Everyone at the Bodrum nufus was great and it only cost 3YTL to get my kimlik - So from start to finish it's been 7 months - and I know some people have had a hard time applying but I found it fairly easy and everyone was really nice and helpful.

Re: Citizenship in Turkey
Hi Luckycat - I have had a most interesting read of this thread and just want to let you know that I think you have been treated outrageously - especially the bit about the borek. What a b...dy nerve!
It is interesting to learn about this situation. Three years ago I thought about applying for citizenship, having resided here for 10 years. I had made Turkey my home and had contributed to the economy by spending my money here, also it would resolve the problem of renewing my res/viz every few years and save on that expense. Hence I thought it would be the answer to everything.
I was told by the Nufus office here (Fethiye) that I would have to go to Mugla. When my friend and myself got to the office there was a man and a woman, who in a normal surly manner (peculiar to Government workers) made it clear that they didn't want to entertain us when we said we wanted to know how to apply. However we were persistent and the man left the room leaving us with the moutachoed surly woman who asked a few questions.
I was convinced she didn't like me (us) either and In that conversation she basically told me to go away and that I would be wasting my money and time. What she said was: (1) I was female (2) I wasn't married (to an Englishman or Turk) and (3) I must NOT have left the Turkish mainland in the last FIVE years (apparently that was the first line of investigation - checking your goings and comings). She didn't say anything about a period of 6 months in any one visit. I was not feeling very confident at this stage and to make a comparison she quoted a story about a Female Pharmacist who had lived and worked (with permit) in Turkey for the last 15 years and even she couln't get it. Well what can you say to that? We left the office quite upset and just accepted the situation and Bos Verred the beaucracy once again. On the trip back to Fethiye I was pretty angry and I vowed to investigate and pursue the matter - but sadly I didn't have the energy and I still continue to fork out for a res/viz.
I would just like to say also that for those people applying for citizenship who are MARRIED I think it is a disgrace that you have to go through this process at all especially when the reason for the 3 year wait law was brought in in an attempt to curb marriages of convenience of those Eastern European girls of the night carrying on business (as I understand it).
It seems that because of migration within Europe these days all the countries are tightening up their immigration laws. A Turkish friend of ours has been living and working in the UK for the last 15 years. He is married to a Turkish Cypriot girl and has a daughter. He speaks perfect English and he also has a very good job as a in-house buyer at one of the Hilton Hotel branches. When he applied for Bristish Cit he had to attend a six month English Language course and take an exam as part of the application.
I wish you much luck and will follow this thread with interest.

Well that is history now as i have decided that i do not want to become a Turkish Citizen anymore !!
I am ok on my residence visa - suits my requirements
I am abit pissed off about the amount of money and time that we wasted last year and also about how the woman in authority tend to treat us Bitish ladies
